  • Assassination of Archduke Franz Ferdinand

    This assassination led to war. Serbian nationalist Gavriloc Princip stepped out of the crowd and shot him. Archduke Franz Ferdinand was heir to the Australian throne.
  • Germany declares war on Russia and France. Great Britain declares war on Germany and Austria-Hungary

    Germany obligated by treaty to support Austria-Hungary. On August 3rd, Germany declared war on Russia's ally France. The Great War has begun after all of this.
  • Hollywood California

    Hollywood becomes the center of movie production in the U.S. The Squaw Man was the first movie to be shown. The Great War interrupted movie production during this time.
  • German U-Boats sink in Lusitania

    1,198 people died during this event. This happened off the coast of Ireland. 128 of the people lost or dead were Americans.
  • The first transcontinental telephone call is made

    Alexander Graham Bell made this phone call. The telephone was created before this, but this was the first transcontinental call. It helped connect people during this war.
  • Woodrow Wilson is reelected as President

    The Democrats renominated Wilson. The Republicans nominated Supreme Court Justice Charles Evans Hughes. Wilson campaigned on the slogan "He Kept Us Out of War".
  • The Battles of Verdun and the Somme

    Millions of people were killed during these battles. The Battle of Somme was a battle of the First World War fought between Britain and French empires and the German Empire. The Battle of Verdun was on the Western Front between the German and French armies.
  • The US declares war on Germany

    The Germans ignore Wilson's calls for peace. Because the Germans ignored this, it meant that the US had to go to war with Germany. WIlson wanted all nations to have peace, but this was a failed attempt.
  • Russia withdraws from the war

    When they withdrew from war, the Germans shifted their armies from the eastern front to the western front in France. The got within 50 miles of Paris by May. The Amerians arrived in time to stop the German advance at Cantigny in France.
  • Congress passes Sedition Act

    Under this, a person could be fined up to $10,000 and sentenced to 20 years in jail. This is for interefering with the war effort. It could also be for saying anything disloyal, profane, or abusive about the government or the war effort.
  • President Willson proposes the League of Nations

    This was an international organization. It was headquartered in Switzerland. It was created after the war to provide a forum for resolving international conflicts.
  • The Bolsheviks establish a Communist regime

    This was established in Russia. They came to power during the October Revolution in the Russian Revolution. They founded the Russian Soviet Federative Socialist Republic which would become the chief constituent of the Soviet Union in 1922.
  • The First World War ends

    The United States and the rest of the war had been utterly changed by the war. It accelereated social change. This social change really effected African Americans and women.
  • Cogress approves the 19th Amendment

    This granted women the right to vote. In 1920, this amendment was ratified by the states. The public supported women suffrage.
  • worldwide influenza epidemic

    This epidemis kills over 30 million people. This epidemic killed more people than the Great War did. It is known as the most devastating and destructive pandemic in world history.
