    Franz Ferdinand Assassination
    The assassination of Archduke Franz Ferdinand instigated the beginning of World War I.
  • Austria-Hungary declares war on Serbia

    Soon after the assassination of Franz Ferdinand, Austria- Hungary declared war on Serbia, who was rebelling. This started WWI because of all the alliances. For instance, Russia was in an alliance with Serbia and Austria-Hungary had an alliance with Germany.
  • First Use of Gas Weapon by Germans

    First Use of Gas Weapon by Germans
    The Germans created a new and deadly weapon known as poison or mustard gas. It could choke, burn, and suffocate whoever walks into the gas. Soon after, the U.S.A. started to use it too. This made the whole war extremely more deadly.

    A German u-boat sunk an un-armed passenger called The Lusitania. This made Americans very wary of Germany as an enemy. They did this because the U.S.A. was trading with Britain and France, which angered the Germans. This one of the very important events that led to America declaring war on Germany.

    1912-1916 President Woodrow Wilson is reelected for President of the united States. His campaign slogan was. "He kept us out of the war." He pledged neutrality, which was very popular in America at the time.
  • Zimmermann Note

    The Zimmermann Note was a telegram meaning to be sent to Mexico from Germany. The message of the telegram was Germany offering a Mexico-Germany alliance if America ever entered the war. Britain intercepted it and informed the Americans, where the civilians thought it was fake but after President Wilson declared war they were convinced.

    After many events urging America into the war, President Wilson asked Congress permission to declare war. They declared war on Germany.
  • Lenin leads Bolsheviks and overthrows Russian government

    The temporary Russian government, which had just overthrown Czar Nicholas II, is overthrown by the Bolsheviks. They wanted a communist country that would be out of the war.
  • War is Over

    War is Over
    On this day, Germany signed an armistice to stop fighting. This led to a American holiday called Armistice day, which was then changed to Veteran's Day.

    Under this deal, Germany had to take full responsibility for the conflict and pay the Allies billions of dollars. It had to lose all its weapons, overseas colonies, and some territories in Europe.
