    Assassination of Franz Ferdinand
    Archduke Franz Ferdinand and his wife Sophie visited Sarajevo, the capitol of Bosnia. Both of them were shot as they were riding the streets of Sarajevo. The shooter was Gavrilo Princip who was part of the Black Hand which was a sercret Serbian society.
  • Austria declares war on Serbia

    Austria declares war on Serbia
    This was the first declaration of war. Other European countries started to take notice. This set off a chain reaction, and led to many other countries becoming involved in World War I. Nations started to take sides and make alliances.
  • Battle of Tannenberg

    Battle of Tannenberg
    This battle was between the Germans and the Russians. Russian forces had attacked into both Austria and Germany. Germany responded with a counterattck at Tannenberg and crushed the Russian army. The Russians came back into full retreat.

    Germany declared war on 2 countries, France and Russia. The French defeated the Germans, and at the same time they destroyed the German's Schlieffen plan. Because the Shlieffen plan failed the Germans, the Russians were able to invade Germany in the east.

    The Gallipoli Campaign was the effort to control the Dardenelles strait. The Allies thought that if they did this, they could "take Constantinople, defeat the Turks, and establish a supply line to Russia." The Turkish troops tried to defend their territory.

    The Germans attacked the French near the city of Verdun. During this battle, there was a use of many new technology which killed greater numbers of people more effectively. There was a total of 600,000 to 700,000 casualties for both sides.

    To help out their French allies, the British army attacked north of the Somme with fourteen infantry divisions, while the French attacked across and south of the Somme with five divisions. In defense, the German army deployed seven divisions.

    Germany announces unrestriced submarine warfare
    Germans announced that their submarines would sink without warning any other ships in the waters around Britain. Germans agreed with President Wilson that they would stop but they were in desperate need of an advantage over the the Allies. They knew that by continuing this, the United States would soon declare war.

    Vladmir Ilyich Lenin took charge of Russia after the Russian Revolution. One of his first actions as leader was to declare a truce with German. The war between Germany and Russia ended after they both signed the Treaty of Brest-Litovsk.
  • Second Battle of the Marne

    Second Battle of the Marne
    The Allies and Germans confront at the Second Battle of Marne. The Allies had a great advantage of 350 tanks which went crashing through the German lines. The Allies were able to advance through Germany.
