    Ach Duke Franz Ferdinand's death
    What? Franz Ferdinand - the heir to the throne of Austria, Hungary- bleed to death and died at 11:30am, from a bullet shot in the Juglar Vein from a Sebrian nationalist. This event occured in Sarajevo, Bosina, Austria, this event ended up gaving Austria an exuse to attact Serbia as a form of revenge. the picture- this was a picture taken at the presentation on emaze just before the assination.

    what- ww1 was the lfirst war to place around the globe and it was the largest war fought world wide in human history.
    while the assanation of Franz ferdninand was one reaon for the war, other reasons were:
    Military- The belief that all countries should build and maintain a strong armies.
    Alliances- The act of countries working together
    Imperialism- The policy; Countries increase in power if they take over other countries.
    Nationalism- Sense of pride in your own country

    What-Germany came to the realisation that it would have to fight both France and it's ally, Russia.
    Germany wanted this to end quickly so it became it's plan to invade Neutral Belgium and defeat France, then turn forces against Russia.
    The western front is a series of trenches built by the Germans, running 700KM from Belgium coast to the Swiss boarder.

    What- Germany invades Belgiam then Britain declears war on Germany and Australia joins the fight. By the 8th of Aug 850 citizans were killed in Liege, central Belgiam.

    As the Germans came to Paris, the French and British armies fought against Germany to stop the Germans from proceeding with their plans at conquering France. This was Britain’s and France’s victory.

    What- The aim for this capture was to take over and destroy the German wireless stations located in German New Guinea, due to having serious negative effects on merchant shipping in the pacific. The Australians succeeded with this mission,.
  • Battle of Ypres

    Battle of Ypres
    What- 3 battles based in Ypres in Belgium. The first began on Oct 30th ending Nov 24th 1914 starting when the Germans were trying to get to the English Channel. The second was from Apr 22nd to May 22 1915 this time the Germans used a heavy poisonous chlorine gas. The last battle (the Passchendaele campaign) was from July 31st to Nov 10 1917, in this battle there was no progress made due to poor weather conditions.

    What- On Christmas day war eased off. Enemies of ww1 crossed battle fields and shared Christmas celebrations. There was joyous carol singing and songs and men from opposing sides exchanged Cigarettes and Plum puddings as gifts. There was also a case of the opposing sides playing a friendly game of soccer. This event however, was not repeated.

    What- The Suez Canal(a place in Egypt) became under attack. After the outbreak of ww1 Britain and India became protective over the canal. Turkey- the ally of Germany- sent troops out to get the Canal. The canal gave a shorter sea route to the Egypt Empire and to the oilfields in Persian gulf.
    which was a great advantage because oil had grown in importance.

    Start- The attack on Gallipoli Peninsula was originally made to try and push the Turkish forces to Istanbul (Turkish capital). Australia, New Zealand, Britain, France, Canada and India took part in the Gallipoli campaign in attempt to battle the Turkish forces on land and eventually get to Istanbul (the Turkish capital).

    What: The Lusitania was a British cruise ship that carried passangers and cargo between britain and the atlantic ocean. During a battle the Germans declared that the seas around Britain a war zone and that any allied ship that crossed into the zone would be attacked.The Lusitania was approaching the coast of Ireland when it was spotted by a German u-boat, which then fired a torpedo.

    What: The battle of Verdun was a battle developed by a German General; Erich von Falkenhayn, as a way to attack the city, Verdun, France. This battle is considered by many historians to the most demanding and long battle to have taken place.

    What: A Series of Battles taken place in the Somme Valley, France, originally planned to try and divert the German forces from the French fortress of Verdun. The first day was the most costly day in the history of Britain who suffered 60 000 casualties and a third of them dead.

    What: This battle was the first major battle that the Australians fought in. The original plan for this attack was to try a draw the German troops away from the battle of Somme and bring them further south. The Germans realised the intention of the attack within only a few hours. The intension was a failure.

    What: 10 miles north of Arras lies the Vimy Ridge. Vimy ridge was a spot that gave armies height so Both the French and German wanted control over the area. The commander of the British forces in France ; Sir Douglas Haig wanted to target Ieper (Ypres) but to do so he had to capture Vimy Ridge.

    What- The battle of Passchendaele, also known as the third battle of Ypres, is located in west Flanders (a part of Belgium), was a very difficult battle consisting of tons of heavy rain and mud, this made life difficult to make any process on the battle field. British, ANZAC, and Canadian troops against the Germans were involved in this battle. The aim was to weaken the Germans by creating a vulnerability in their lines and make their way to the German submarine base.

    What- During the ww1 the Russian Provisional government was taken over by the Bolshevik Party. This party was led by a man called Vladimir Lenin. The reason for the Bolshevik party to overthrow the main government was to withdraw from the war. After signing the Treaty Brest-Litovsk in 1918, Russia withdrew from the war.

    What- The first symptom of this deadly virus was on the 11th of March 1918. After this, many army camps and regions of the country had similar outbreaks. This flu (reported at Fort Riley, Kansas) swiftly spread across to Europe then to the US and Asia. It claimed around 16 million lives and killed 50 million.

    what- The war came to an end on the western front due to the central powers having been defeated by hunger and exhaustion.

    What- The Armistice was an agreement signed by German, Great Britain and French representatives, as an agreement to end fighting. The Armistice was signed was 1:00am, 11th day, 11th month in Ferdinand Foch’s railway carriage, located in the forest of Compiegne, north of Paris.
