    Allen Melancthon Sumner
    Allen Melancthon Summer became a Second Lieutenant for the Marine Corps. Until 1909 then he was transferred to the Marine Barracks of the Naval Academy. Allen was in the Marine corps for awhile before the 1st world war. But when it began he was retired but was brought back to duty in 1917.

    How it All Began
    This was an event that caused one of the biggest wars, it was the day that Archduke Franz Ferdinand was assassinated. The archduke was apart of the Austro-Hungarian empire. Which was an empire that Siberia didn’t really like so a groups of students apart of the The Black Hand, which is a nationalist group, was given weapons to try and assassinate the Archduke. One student by the name of Gavrilo Princip succeeded in assassinating not only the Archduke of Austro-Hungarian but also his wife.

    Austria declares war on Siberia , because Austrian Government believed that Siberian Government was to blame for the assassination of Franz Ferdinand and his wife. Austria decide to gather there alliances to see who would back them up. Germany sided with Austria, while Russia ended up allying with Siberia and had France to back them up.   • Declares of War

    Declares of War
    In the month of August the World erupts in war. Germany goes to war with not only Russia but along with France and Britain. Germany declares war on France because the soldiers had to pass through Belgium but was warned if they step a foot into Belgium then there will be war. Germany didn’t listen and invaded Belgium which caused war between them and France, plus Britain. Not only that but Australia signs agreement saying that they will back Britain up and gave them a pledge of 20,000 men.
  • The Battle of Marne

    The Battle of Marne
    The battle of Marne is a one of the first battles fought between the German Armies and the Allies. It started with the German Army advancing towards Paris, French , and Britain, but they were cut off by French and British soldiers on the line of the river of Marne. After very bloody battles, with more then 250,000 casualties from both sides, they got to Belgian coast and that was the start of a four year war of trench wars.   • The First Gas Bombing

    The First Gas Bombing
    Both sides had used tear gas during the first winter of war, but then Germany decided to use a deadly gas called xylyl bromide. Xylyl Bromide is basically tear gas bit if you use to much then it can be very hazardous. This gas killed 1,000 Russian Troops in Bolimov. German armies also unleashed thousands of canister that were filled with chlorine gas. This caused 7,000 casualties from the British, French, and Canadian. It frightened soldier and there families back at there home.

    One of the weapons of the Germany's were the U-boats. U-boats were submarines that patrolled the Atlantic and Mediterranean trade routes. The Lusitania was a civilian passenger liner, the boat was sunk by the coast of Ireland,it was shot with a torpedo by the U-boats. More then 1,200 passenger were killed, including 128 American were killed. America was unhappy with Germany’s campaign because of this incident, forcing Germany to change the campaign to prevent war with The United States.

    Conscription Introduced to U.K
    Conscription was introduced to Britain because there were so many lost on the Western Coast that Britain needed backup for the voluntary army forces. So they enforced conscription which is when men by law have to join the war. So any men from the ages of 18 to 41 was sent to war, unless they worked in a factory. It was just any factory only men that worked in the factory that benefited the war.
  • Battle of Jutland

    Battle of Jutland
    The Battle of Jutland is when Germany fleet leaves the safety of it’s ports to try and attack the British fleet. Germany was met with the full force of the British Navy just off the coast of Denmark, Jutland. The British lost more ships then Germans did and failed to destroy the German High Sea fleets. But then the German ended up retreating because they were scared to lose more boats to this battle. So for the rest of the war Germans rely on U-boats to destroy British supply lines.

    This was the day that Germany had there first air raid on London. Germans did this hoping to prevent British air forces from attacking the German air force. So Germany attacked London and the South East hoping to draw out the British air force out. They believed that the British would try and protect there land instead of fighting the German.
  • America Joins War

    America Joins War
    America joins the war on this day, they found out that Germany was planning on attacking the United States early January through the Zimmerman Telegram. But America still didn’t join the war, until Germany restarted the U-boat campaign which killed thousand of Americans. So President Wilson persuade congress to allow America to go to war with Germany. When American troops showed up to the battlegrounds, it was a hard blow to the Germans.

    Allen Sumner Entry About German Prisoners
    Captain Allen wrote to his mother about how busy they were at the base because of the increase of Marine corp. He also told her about how they have two German prisoners who seemed consent with where they were. One even wrote about how good the food they ate was and that he was learning to be a farmer. The camp he was at was to become a big camp of Marines in Ocquenqun, (may be misspelled but was spelled like that in diary) Virginia.

    Captain Allen Sumner wrote to his wife about how they got attacked by the enemies. The enemies attacked them by submarines and the attack lasted for an hour and a half from the first shot to the last. The 20th gun co. groups was the only ones to fire back at first and they only had to shoot a little bit. The destroyer did the rest for them and they were all fine.

    In the letter Sumner wrote to his wife he talks about his time on the battlefield. He talks about have they had been under attack by bombs, machine guns, and rifles. The he talks about how they lost lots of men and many more were wounded. Then he tells her about Caption Williams died and Captain Cole losing to his wounds. This was one of the last letters he sent to his wife before he died.
  • Allen Sumners Death

    Allen Sumners Death
    Captain Allen Sumner was put in place ,of Major Cole who was wounded ,in the right front command. Not a month later on this day Captain Sumner was killed on duty in Vierzy, Near Soissons. He was hit by a fragment of high explosive shell and was killed instantly. He was given Croix de Guerre with Gilt Star and a 3 Silver Star Citations.
  • The End of War

    The End of War
    Before the Allied Armies can invade Germany an armistice or and agreement is signed. So Germans surrender and withdrawal from Belgium and France. The fighting ceases at 11 am, which to America, France ,and Britain it was the end of the war. That was how World War 1 ended.
