    World War 1 timeline

  • First battle of Marne - 13000 British, 250000 German, and 250000 French casualties

From September 5, 1914 - September 12, 1914, I chose this even because it was the first major battle or the war because it affected many people by having so many casualties in it.
  • First battle of Ypres

From October 19, 1914 - November 30, 1914, It was a major was because it was the first battle fought by Canadian troops and also it was the battle when Germans used chlorine gas on the Canadians. As an effect of the brutality of the war the poem In Flanders Fields was written.
  • trench warfare begins

I chose this event because it was a big turning point and a large part of World War 1 which had a long lasting change because the trenches were used for a large part of the war and are still here today. What changed since that time is that the trenches were made more modern and were sanitized so if people visit them then it wouldn't be like how it actually was in the war.
  • Submarine blockade

I chose this event because its where the Germans declare a "war zone" around Great Britain by having a submarine blockade around Britian where even nuetral merchant vessels could be targetted if needed to so that effected the Britian's navy corps.
  • Poision gas used by germans

this event created major lasting change and allowed for change in modern days also because it was because of that time that we have poision gas now and also, now we use poision gas but it is much more advanced that the ones used in the war
  • Germans use flame throwers against British.

this event created long lasting change because it affected many british soldiers and the flame thrower has been changed and improved in many ways since the war to work more effectively.
  • Battle of Verdun

From Februrary 21, 1916 - December 18, 1916 the battle of Verdun was probably the longest and most costly battle on the western front affecting in over a million casualties.
  • Conscription officially becomes a law

This event had affected many people by having men forced to join the war by force and law and almost half a million men joined becuase of it. The government felt that they needed to force men to join to compensate for their losses in the war.
  • Battle of Jutland

This battle was the major naval battle in World War 1 with the British Royal Navy's Grand Fleet against the German Navy High Seas Fleet and it affected the navy corps of each side very heavily from the damage caused to the submarines and ships.
  • Battle of the Somme

From July 1, 1916 - November 18, 1916 this battle was very significant because it was the bloodiest and most gruesome of any battles fought in world war 1 because Sir Douglas Haig was encountering many unecessary casualties like by the end there were over 1.5 million casualties. As an effect of the war Haig was called the "butcher of the somme" because of all the deaths he caused but the British still let him be commander in war after all the casualties he caused.
  • US declares war on Germany

I chose this event because it was another turning point in the war because the fact that Americans came to help affected British because if the Americans never came then Germany would've easily taken over British lands. This declaration also affected many people like the US troops that had to come over seas to fight against Germany.
  • Battle of Vimy Ridge

From April 9, 1917 - April 12, 1917 this battle was a defining moment for Canada since it was when all 4 Canadian divisions attacked together as 1. Effects of the battle were that Canada got a seat in the League Of Nations and women were able to vote freely.
  • Battle of Gallipoli

From April 25, 1915 - January 9, 1916, I chose this battle because it affected New Zealand shape a independent national indentity and it created an alliance between Austrialia, New Zealand, and Turkey. People thought that when the battle ended it was just a waste of supplies and lives of people.
  • Battle of Passchendaele ends

From July 11, 1917 - November 10, 1917, I chose this event because it had affected so many people during the war because there were over half a million casualties in which over 140,000 were deaths. Sir Douglas Haig felt that it was worth it even though it was not worth it because of all the unecessary deaths and casualties that occurred.
  • Abdication

German Kaiser Wilhelm II abdicates and flees Germany
  • Armistice signed

I chose this event because it was a major part in history because it was when World War 1 officially ended which affected many people and countries. What changed since that time is that now we know how brutal wars are so there are other ways to solve problems rather than by force.
