    After Fokker’s first plane was wrecked he created the Spin II. He goes on to earn his pilots licence in this plane. He later creates the Spin III.

    On this date Archduke Franz Ferdinand is assassinated by Black Hand. His country of Austria-Hungary blames Serbia and declares war on them. This creates a domino effect in which most of Europe goes to war.

    This is the battle in which trench warfare is first used. Both sides began to bunker down into the dirt. The French also stopped the rapidly advancing Germans.

    Britain declares the sea North of Germany as a war zone. They create a blockade around Germany. They hope that this will prevent supplies from reaching Germany.

    In response to the British blockade, the Germans create a blockade around Great Britain. German submarines soon surround the island. They are very effective in blocking ships on there way to Britain.

    Anthony Fokker creates his interrupter gear. This allows planes to have forward pointing machine guns on planes without shooting the propellers. This new invention is a series of levers that are connected to the drive shaft and the machine gun. When the propeller is in front of the gun the gear is activated and stops the plane from firing.

    In the second battle of Ypres the Germans use poison gas that is effective for the first time. The Germans used chlorine that they put in shells. The canisters would explode on contact with the ground and release its gas. By the end of the war though, gas became less effective because of countermeasures like gasmask.

    The RMS Lusitania was a merchant ship and was sunk by a German u boat. 1,198 people died, of those 128 were American. This was another one of the major reasons that America join WWI.

    The Zimmerman telegram was a telegram sent from Germany to Mexico. The telegram asked for Mexico to attack the United States and in return Mexico would receive Texas, New Mexico, Arizona, and California. The telegram was intercepted by the United States. This deeply angered the United States and was one of the main reasons that they entered the war.

    Anthony Fokker designs and develops the D-VII. He designs it with the help of the “Red Baron.” The “Baron” dies before he can flie the plane.

    After claiming 80 kills, Manfred von Richthofen is shot down over enemy lines. Richthofen is one of the most celebrated pilots of World War one. The Red Baron flew an all red Fokker Dr.I triplane. The Red Baron also helped create and design planes with Fokker.

    At the end of the war all countries involved in the war met to sign a treaty in Versailles, France. All of the victorious countries blame Germany for causing the war. They make Germany split apart, demilitarize, and pay money to the victors for their losses.
