  • Battle of Tannenberg

    Battle of Tannenberg
    Russia arched to Prussia but it became hard for the Russians to get food and supplies to their men because of the differences in railway gauge. The Germans used their railway to surround the Russian second army before anyone realized what was happening. The Russians not only lost but thousands of men were killed and 125,000 were taken as prisoners.

    Austria declares war on Serbia
    A Serbian citizen assassinates Archduke Franz Ferdinand of Austria. Exactly a month later Austria declares war on Serbia. This is the start of the first world war.

  • Germany declared war on France

    Germany declared war on France
    Germany first invades neutral Belgium. Germany claimed that France had bombed a town in Germany called Nuremberg. German troops were on the way to France so France declared war back on Germany.
  • Zeppelins

    Zeppelins
    The use of airships started to increase for the Germans. They used bigger ones for London and smaller ones to protect the western front. The only thing that could stop them was the use of aeroplanes to shoot them down.
  • Battle of Verdun

    Battle of Verdun
    The Germans attacked the French at Verdun in hopes to "bleed the French dry". The battle lasted for 9 months but the results were inconclusive. The Germans lost 430,000 men and the French lost 540,000 men.
  • Battle of Jutland

    Battle of Jutland
    This was the only true large-scale naval battle. The Germans were going to split up the British fleet and then destroy each ship but the British were aware that this was their plan and they worked around that plan. Few fires were shot before the Germans withdrew.

    The battle of Somme was the German Empire fighting the British and French empires. This was the first great offensive battle of World War 1 for the British. This Battle lasted 5 months and 500,000 German soldiers, 200,000 French soldiers, and 420,000 British soldiers died.
  • German U-Boat Campaign

    German U-Boat Campaign
    Orders were given to Germans to step up the U-Boat Campaign. All neutral or allied ships were to be sunk and then a month later a million tons of ship parts were sunk. After that Neutral countries would not ship goods to Britain.
  • USA declares war on Germany

    USA declares war on Germany
    US ships were sunk by German U-Boats because they were a neutral country. Although all neutral ships were sunk, this still upset the United States a lot. The United States then declares war on Germany.
  • Armistice was signed

    Armistice was signed
    On the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month the armistice was signed. The terms were harsh for Germany but they really had no other choice but to sign it. Germans were the allies last opponent.
