    Assassination of Archduke Franz Ferdinand
    Archduke Franz Ferdinand was killed as well as his wife while travelling to Bosnia-Herzgovina. They both got shot in the chest but Archduke also suffered a blow to his head
  • Europeans Went To War

    Europeans Went To War
    Most of Europe went to war because Austria-Hungary invaded Serbia. Russia went to protect Serbia because they had honoured an agreement with them and went to defend them. Russia going to war meant that Britain and France also had to protect Serbia from Austri-Hungary and that led to Germany and Italy fighting in the war as well. Creating World War I. (World War I is named that because all the power at the time came from Europe.)

    First British ship sank by a German U-Boat
    Early morning September 5, 1914, HMS Pathfinder was sunk by a German U-Boat. This sybollized the first huge success by a German U-Boat
  • RMS Lusitania

    RMS Lusitania
    Lusitania was sunk by a German U-Boat when the shot a missile off of the coast of Ireland. Germans say they thought it was carrying lots of cargo that Britain could use against them. It ended up being just a passenger ship leaving off of New York. It killed 128 Aremican citizens and only 761 passengers survived out of the total number of passengers of 1959. This got Americans mad and was one of the few things that made them go to war with Germany in 1917. Improvement to technology and weaponry

    Battle of Ypres
    From April 21-May 25, 1915. This was one of the worst battles in World War I. This was because this was the first war where any gas was used, in this case Chlorine gas was used. This led to better improvements of the gas mask later on. This battle occured in Belgium. This was an improvement in the German's weaponry.
  • Battle of Somme

    Battle of Somme
    From July 1-November 18, 1916 The Battle of Somme was happening. There were 24000 dead Candians and over 1000000 dead and wounded from both sides. The allies gained 545km squared of land. It was one one the most bloody wars at the time.
  • Americans go to war

    Americans go to war
    Americans declared war on Germany. The sinking of the Lusitania and the death of American citizens made them angry and they decided to fight back. In fact they did not go to war with the Germans immediatley after the loss of the Lusitania, after a while they found that the Germans were disrupting the trading partnership they had with Britain (because of U-boats in the British waters) and decided to go to war.
  • Battle of Vimy Ridge

    Battle of Vimy Ridge
    April 9-12, 1917 at 5:30am in Northern France the Battle of Vimmy Ridge began. British and French soldiers were begining to lose too many soldiers. Then Canda was sent to aid and they ended up capturing the ridge completely by April 12. They did so by coming using the creeping barrage under the contril of Aurthur Currie.

    Conscription was Introduced
    The Military Act of Conscription was passed which forced male individuals aged 20-45 to join the army. This act was passed by Robert Borden, the prime minister at the time which had promised, no conscription. This made his voters extremely unhappy because they felt cheated. This led to riots and to steet fights.

    Battle of Passchendaele (The Mud War)
    October 26- November 10, 1917. The battle of Passchendale had a tragic event that happened. It would not stop raining. Soldiers suffered Trench foot which was a disease where they lost toes and parts of their feet. This was because bacteria in the boots would get wet and they would cause an infection. Also the soldiers, horses, nurses and equpitment drowned and sank. On the final day they reached high ground where they were able to overlook Ypres.
  • Halifax Explosion

    Halifax Explosion
    In the morning of December 6th two ships were on the harbor the Mont-Blanc and Imo. When they collided they spilled oil and caused a huge explosion. All the windows in the city were shattered and a weaponry factory was lost in the explosin. Thousands of lives were lost and the blast created a tsunami which wiped off a small indigenous island. This was very disruptive because Halifax was a docking station at the time of war.

    The signing of The Treaty of Versailles
    Since the Germans lost the war they were forced to sign it. Unfortunately for them that meant that they were completely responsible for the war. They had to pay $7 billion in damage to repair their country and the other countries. The treaty also stated that their military was to have 100,000 soldiers, they were not allowed to have an air force or a navy. They were also not allowed to have any soldiers on the Rhineland. Also, they had to give back ALL of their colonies and captured land.
