    Assignation of Archduke Ferdinand
    On June 28, 1914, Archduke Ferdinand and his wife Sophie was shot and killed by Gavrilo Princip. The archduke traveled to Sarajevo to inspect armed forces. The assassination set off a long chain of events, Austria immediately blamed Serbian for the attack, Russia supported Serbian, soon Austria declared war on Serbian
  • Battle of Tannenberg

    Battle of Tannenberg
    August 26, 1914, the German 8th army strikes with lethal force against the Russian 2nd army. In mid August, 1914, Russia sent two armies to East Prussia, when Germany was still going over its war plan. In total 50,000 Russian soldiers were killed, while 92,000 was taken prisoner.

He’s trying to get into a business college, to study bookkeeping. He really wishes to play tennis against her.

    Has been really busy that week and doesn’t know if he can get through or not. He is in little hopes that he will be getting a job. He’s thought about going home over the summer to visit. Hopes that she’d come and visit before he leaves if he doesn’t get a job. Wants her to let him know when her school closes, so he knows the right time to show up.

    Sinking of the Lusitania
    The sinking of the Lusitania occurred on May 7th, 1915. It ended up killing 1,128 people including 128 Americans. A German U-boat torpedoed the Lusitania causing the vessel to sink in 20 minutes.

    Just arrived in Knoxville, heading to Virginia. He leaves at 8:25 on the 26th. Hopes that it will take a few months, but he’s afraid it will take a little longer. He wishes he was in Jellico with Myrtle to help housekeep. He explains why he tells her his location every time he writes to her. He’s also very happy with the picture she sent him

    The British army launched a major attack against German forces. It was the last attempt to drive the German army away from France before the onset of winter, but the German forces ended up being too strong for the British forces. General Sir John French was getting replaced by General Sir Douglas Haig.

    Battle of Jutland
    The Battle of Jutland was a naval battle fought between Britain and Germany. It was the largest naval battle World War I consisting primarily dreadnought class war ships. The Germans plan was to use Britain’s fast scouting group to lure their battle-curses into the of Germany who station submarines in an advanced cross. Fourteen British ships and eleven German ships sank with the total of 9,823 casualties. In the end both sides Britain and Germany claimed victory.

    Battle of the Somme
    The British lost more than 57,000 soldiers, with more than 19,000 soldiers killed on the first day. The battle began on July 1st, 1916. By the end of the first day of the battle more than 38,000 British soldiers were wounded. Early on July 15, British troops launched a second attack, which took the Germans by surprise.

    In February 1916, German forces advanced, calming Fort Douaumont and Fort Vaux. February 21, 1916, at least 1,220 guns within a eight-mile perimeter opened fire. By the end of the war in December both sides were left with 600,000 casualties

    Started to wonder what had become of her, he didn’t know if she was dead, alive, or fighting. His brother’s wife as a nice girl for him, and her dad is worth about sixty thousand. He wants her to take a boy in and he’d take the girl in, so they can keep the sixty thousand in their family.

    Zimmerman Telegram
    In January, 1917, British cryptographers received a telegram from Germany. When the telegram was finally translated, the telegram was sent right over to the United States. This was one of the key causes that made the US really furious and making them join the war. The telegram was meant for Mexico from Germany, who asked Mexico to join their side in the war. In return, German promised to give Mexico the Southwest of the United States.
  • Selective Service Act

    Selective Service Act
    On May 18, 1917, after weeks from when the US entered the war, Congress passed the Selective Service Act. Gives the US President the ability to draft soldiers. At the time the US only had 100,000 men that had no experience on the battlefield. The act required men from the ages of 21 and 30 to register for military service. By the end of World War 1 at least 24 million men registered for the military under the Selective Service Act
  • Battle of Messines

    Battle of Messines
    June 7 - 14, 1917. The first strategy that the British took to take over Messines was the securing of Ypres. The British started to attack on June 7th, 1917, leaving 10,000 German soldiers killed. To proceed the British had a bombardment of 2,000 guns, which was a big success. At least 7,000 Germans were taken as prisoner, Germans were staggering on the battlefield

    First large-scale battle fought by American soldiers during World War 1. Begin northwest of Paris-to-Metz road in Belleau Wood. Within 45 miles from US forces Germany penetrates the Western. Front, while John J. Pershing helped halted the Germans. The very first day of the battle suffered more than 1,000 casualties

    Battle of St. Mihiel
    Begins on September 12, 1918, ended September 16, 1918. First U.S. led offensive i during World War 1. General John Pershing, got to use the US Army in combat for the first time in September 12, when St. Mihiel was being attacked
