    Assassination Of Archduke Francis Ferdinand
    Archduke Francis Ferdinand was killed on June 28, 1914. He was killed in Bosnia by a Serbian Nationalist group called the “Black Hand.” Serbia was mad because they wanted Bosnia to be apart of Serbia. That sparked the First World War. This war lasted a nasty 5 years.

    Allied Powers
    The Allied Powers formed on July 28, 1914 when WW1 started. The Allies consist of France, Britain, and Russia. America joined when the Allied Powers needed it desperately. America was neutral until Germany killed 100 Americans when they took down the ship, and when they wanted Mexico on their side. That is how the Allied Powers formed.
  • Central Powers

    Central Powers
    The Central Powers also formed on July 28, 1914. They consist of Germany, and Austria- Hungary. The Ottoman Empire and Bulgaria join. Like the US, the Ottoman Empire, and Bulgaria were neutral. The Ottoman Empire joined a little after the war started. Bulgaria joined in October of 1915. These were the four major countries in the Central Powers.

    Almost every country brought the machine gun to war. They used the machine gun to shoot more ammunition very quickly. It could shoot 500 rounds in one minute. Russia, Germany, and Britain were using guns that were based on the Maxim System. France and Austria-Hungary were using primitive designs. They were responsible for the majority of deaths during WW1.

    German troops were penetrating far into Northeast France. While that was happening, French and Brittish forces were creating a counterattack to use on the Germans. They mounted the perfect counterattack and the Germans’ plan failed to work. The plan was called the Schlieffen plan. Germans would flank from Germany and go through the top border of France. France and Britain stopped it all from happening

    Christmas Day Truce
    The Christmas Day Truce happened on Christmas in 1914. Germans came across no-mans land unarmed, and they were yelling Merry Christmas. Allies thought it was a fake, but once they saw that they were unarmed, they believed it. Everyone got together and sang carols, gave presents, and had a friendly game of soccer. Multiple soldiers took this war break to pick up dead bodies and get them out of no-man's land.

    Germans Introduce Poison Gas
    The Germans introduced the chlorine gas on April 22, 1915. They released 150 tons of this deadly gas by a French division in Belgium. In January of 1916, the Germans released an even more deadly gas called xylyl bromide, which went into the shells that they shot at the Russians. Since it was winter, the gas froze. That killed at least 1,000 Russians. There were multiple gas attacks coming from the Germans that same year.

    Zimmerman Telegram
    Germany sent Mexico a telegram on January 19, 1917 telling them to join the Germans in the war. Britains deciphered it and told American leaders about it. In the telegram, Germans said they would help give Texas, New Mexico, Arizona, and California back. It got Americans mad and so they were getting ready to join the war. So this means that Germany was trying to get a whole country in North America to turn on the rest of the North American continent, just to help Germany win the war.

    America Joins World War 1
    When World War 1 started, America was neutral, meaning they could join the war if they wanted to join a side and fight. America enters the war after a German submarine fired a torpedo at a British ship called “Lusitania”. The ship had about 100 Americans on board. On April 6, 1917, America had officially declared war on Germany. They fought in the war for only two full years but helped the Allies beat the Central Powers.

    Forbes was writing about being over there for a while. He also saw his brother Andrew several times that day, and he said he was wanting to go home a lot. Forbes took a guy he knew to dinner, and the Red Cross. Then they played ball. Therefore, Forbes had a good New Years.

    The war ended at the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month in 1918. Germany had signed an armistice agreement with the Allies in France. Germany was proved guilty and had to pay reparations to any country. This made Germany upset and they did not have very much money left after that war. Germany was in poverty for a long time after the war

    Forbes was telling his father that he had a good day. He saw guns get taken from tanks and airplanes. He also traveled and saw Napoleon’s Tomb, the Eiffel Tower and other important places. He tells his dad to give thoughts to Nancy. He went somewhere at nine in the morning and then he went back to camp.

    In this letter he talks about how his brother Andrew is leaving. So he gave him a big bag full of chocolates and cigarettes. Forbes also received his Christmas package and he really appreciated it. As for Forbes, he cannot leave yet. He still has six whole months before he can go home.

    In this letter, Forbes talks about how he has a ball team. They had scheduled games that got cancelled because of the weather. He says he will be there for a few more months with the way that its looking. The French were trying to take a hill but they failed to do it and they lost a lot of men for that. Americans also tried to get the hill in a strategic way and took it.

    Forbes Heard The News
    In this letter he writes to his father saying that all of his stuff is packed. They are getting ready to leave when he heard unfortunate news. The hospital he is working in will now be a German War Camp. By that time, 1000 prisoners will be there shortly. Forbes overheard that he will be there for another 4 months.
