Assassination of Franz Ferdinand
Franz was next in line for the Austro-Hungarian throne. He killed in the streets of Serjavo. His assassination was the spark to start World War 1. -
Beginning of World War 1
Germany leads an attack on Belgium, to start World War 1. They attack Belgium as an obstacle to get to France. This is the beginning of the first World War. -
Germans use Chemicals
Germans made fire shells and filled them with chlorine gas. This is the first time of using chemical warfare. Unfortunately for Germany, they are unable to capitalize on their opportunity after breaching the line with chemical gas. -
Beginning of Tanks
The British are the first to use tanks in warfare.They are not an effective weapon as hoped. But, they are good for clearing barbed wire and other obstacles. -
Wilson wants War
President Wilson wants to enter World War 1. He tells congress his reasons of why he wants to. He is ready to join the Allies. -
USA
Congress approves the war. The U.S. declares war on Germany. They fight on the side of France and Britain. -
The Draft
The Selective Service act is put into use. There were some people opposed to this new idea. But President Wilson signs despite the criticism. -
Peace Treaty
Russia decides to sign a peace treaty with Germany. The treaty greatly benefits Germany.This allows them to move from Eastern front and fight with a full army on the western front. -
End of Belleau Wood
This was a long high casualty battle. It lasted 3 weeks and changed sides 6 times. The Americans lost 10,000 men. -
Armistice day
This was the end of the War. There was an armistice made and signed. It was an agreement to stop fighting on both sides.
