    Archduke Franz Ferdinand was assassinated in Sarajevo, Bosnia on June 28th 1914. Archduke Franz Ferdinand was assassinated by a group called the black hand that Bosnia should be controlled by Serbia. Due to the death of Archduke Franz Ferdinand this sparked World War 1.

    In world war 1 trench warfare was a key topic throughout the western front.Trenches are big ditches that are used to provide cover and were very long with the new inventions of machine guns and poison gas trenches were a way of providing cover. Trenches were also a way to prevent exposure to the new deadly weapon of poison gas.

    On July 28th, 1914 The Austrian Government blamed the Serbia government for the death of Archduke Franz Ferdinand and his wife and declared a war between the two. Serbia allies, Russia mobilized and was willing to support them if it was needed and offered support and aid. Through their alliance with France, Russia also called on the French for aid.

    On August 1st, 1914 Germany declares war on Russia and France and Belgium begin full mobilization. On August 3rd, 1914 Germany also declares war on France. Germany invades Neutral Belgium and Britain tells Germany to withdraw and Germany does not withdraw and proceeds to invade Belgium. Germany does not withdraw from Belgium and Britain declares a war on Germany.

    Between August 26th and the 30th the Russian army marches into Prussia. it was difficult for the Russians to get supplies. Germany used a railway to surround the Russian army. The Russians lost the battle and many were killed and taken prisoners. Germany lost 13,000 men in this battle.

    Both sides in the war relied on airplanes and were a big part of World War 1. The airplanes originally had no weapons on it but soon added machine guns and other equipment. due to the new aircraft these planes were able to slow the movement of trench warfare.

    April 22nd 1915 the Germans used lethal poison gas.This gas shocked the french and was carried with the wind.The Germans used 150 tons of poison gas and placed it close to enemy lines. This was the first poison gas attack against the allied forces.

    Machine guns in World War 1 often needed a gun crew to maintain its stability and its efficiency. The gun crew often used 4 to 6 men depending on the availability of them.These men could shoot around 400 to 600 rounds per minute. The guns would overheat and would need to cool down in order to be active again. Machine guns during World War 1 put halt to movement during the war.

    Gas masked during World War 1 were used as protection against the poison gas the Germans introduce earlier in the war. The first gas mask were not well developed considering no one would have known that they were going to be using the gas itself. The mask gave protection by being dipped in soap,water. Many were surprised and shocked by the introduction of gas and did not expect it.

    Tanks didn’t have as successful role at the beginning of world war 1 like the machine gun or airplanes. Tanks helped with some mobility to those that were stuck in the trenches and provided a leading point for some soldiers. The tanks went at a top speed of 4 miles per hour and turned sharply at top speed. The Tanks usually required a group of ten to run.

    February 21st 1916 Germans attacked France at Verdun. The Germans and France fought for nine months. Both sides of the war had multiple casualties with France losing 540,000 men and Germany losing 430,000 men. This battle led the British to Start the battle of the Somme, the British goal by doing this was to relieve the french.

    April 6th 1917 the USA declares war on Germany because of the sinking of the Lusitania the ship having 100 Americans on it. The US was originally going to be Neutral but after the sinking of the Lusitania the united states would have to choose a side.The US declares war on Germany. The British intercept a message from Germany to mexico. Germany was trying to build an alliance with mexico against the US and offered them to get back the land that the US once took from them.

    James was a farmer when he was drafted and he was 24 living with his parents. He would have had to pass a physical and would have to receive multiple vaccinations. James sent many letters to his mother who kept them in a shoe box.

    The British was ordered an attack on the Germans to attack a German sector at Amiens. The battle of Amiens helped bring a stop and an end to World War 1 and the allied powers won the war. 75,000 men, 500 tanks and 2000 planes along with the German defense not being very prepared the attack.
