    CORE: A northern-based organization dedicated to nonviolent protests against racial oppression. In December of 1960, the Supreme Court concluded that segregation in certain places was illegal.

    This act banned discrimination based on race, color, religion, sex, or nation origin for employment.

    The 24th Amendment
    The 24th amendment prohibited a poll tax on elections for federal officials.This gave hope to many civil rights activists who did not have access to these elections before.
  • Voting Rights Act of 1965

    Voting Rights Act of 1965
    This act put the entire registration process into federal control. After this, the south was pushed to sign up new African American voters. In 1968, the number of eligible African American voters in Alabama jumped to 57%
