MS DOS is released, not really an operating system, since it required users to type in commands in order to execute functions. -

Windows 1.0 is created but is not yet revealed to the public. -
Windows 1.0 made public.
WIndows 1.0 is announced to the public. It takes a while to spread and skepticle people call it firmware. Although it is now annouced, it will still be a few years before it is realeased. -
Windows is released to the public.
Windows 1.0 is released to the public and allows people to navigate through "windows" with a mouse than typing in MS-DOS commands. In the advertisement, Steve Balmer, the person in the advertisement, shows its wonder with the clock, calculator, paint, and reversi. -

16 bit systems existed up to August 29 2001, but there were other bit sytems still available. At the end of this timeline, Windows 2000 Advanced Server Limited Edition and Windows 2000 Datacenter Server Limited Edition were introduced, which are 64 bit operating systems, but it is not included in this since it is not 16 or 32 bit. -
Windows 2.0
Windows 2.0 is made which allows windows to overlap and is faster than the WIndows 1.x series. It also includes desktop icons and greater memory with a better graphics. -

Windows 2.10 is released. -

Windows 2.11 is released. -

Windows 3.0 is released. -

Windows NT 3.1 is released, the first of the windows 32 bit operating systems. -

Windows for workgroups 3.11 is released. Instead of being 32 bit, windows for wordgroups 3.11 is 16 bit again. -

Windows NT 3.5 is released in 1994. -
Windows 95 is released
Windows 95 was the most advertised windows operting system of its time. It included many new features such as long file names, a taskbar, the start button, and the internet. One of the advertisements mentioned that "you can now use the incredible power of Windows 95 to goof off." -

WIndows NT 4.0 is released -

Windows 98 is released. -

Windows 98 SE(second edition) is released. -
