    Maine becomes a free state and Missouri becomes a slave slave. Split the Louisanna Purchase along 36 30 with the North being free and the South being slave. This caused more of a division in the country, which helped lead to the Civil War.

    Dred Scott was a slave owned by John Emerson. They both spent a few years in free territory before going back to Missouri. Emerson died in Missouri. When he died Scott sued for his freedom.

    It was a law that required people to catch and return runaway slaves. If someone helped the save escape instead of returning them they would be fined $1,000. It split the two sides even more because the north wouldn't always follow the law.

    Charles Sumner was attacked with a cane by Preston Brooks. The North didn't like this they said that "the South cannot tolerate free speech anywhere." While the North didn't like this the South was happy. They praised Brooks for what he did they even sent him more canes.

    It took 10 years for the official rulling to be placed.Because of his race Scott wasn't a citizen and didn't have the right to sue.Also just because he lived in the free territory for a while it did not mean he was free.The court also ruled that Congress did't have the right to ban slavery in a territory.The South was happy of this rulling because it ment that slavery was legal in territories.The North denounced the rulling. It increased a even higher tension and more of a split in the nation.

    There were 7 debates between Abraham Lincoln and Stephen Douglas. The two traveled around having debates over who would take the Senate seat. Lincoln was with the Republican party and Douglas was with the Democrat party.The North wanted Lincoln to win and the south wanted Douglas which caused more of a devide between the two.

    John Brown led a group of men to capture Federal arsenal at Harpers Freey. He thought there was going to be a army of slaves that would rise up against him to rebell. The idea didn't happen and he was captured. He was sentenced to hang and was a martyr to the antislavery cause.

    The Southern states started to remove themselves frm the Union. South Carolina was the first to leave. By Febuary 1861 another 6 states had left. In 6 days ty had a new government and had elected a president. The new president was Jefferson Davis. This was the beginning of the nation spliting into two.
