    Great Plains
    The Great Plains was where the Native Americans lived. They were located in the west central part of the United States. It was very hard to live in the Great plains. The Native Americans were there first but got pushed out of their homes. A lot of battles happened in the Great Plains
  • Assimilation

    Assimilation
    "Absorb and integrate (people, ideas, or culture) into a wider society or culture" The U.S government made policies aiming to assimilate the Native Americans into the European-American Society. In 1806 the Federal office of the Superintendent of Indian Trade was created, This was created to monitor and control economic activity between Indian nations and the U.S. government.

    This was the moving of cattle. It is reffered to as the Long drive because it was very long trips the cattles were taking under supervision of the people watching the cattle. It was not until the 1830s, that this became a steady occupation.
  • Homestead Act

    Homestead Act
    The Homestead Act opened up settlement in the western United States, allowing any American, including freed slaves, to put in a claim for up to 160 free acres of federal land. 15,000 homestead claims were made by the end of the Civil War. More followed in thte post-war years. Eventually, 1.6 million individual claims would be approved
  • Morrill Act

    Morrill Act
    Officially defined as, "An Act Donating Public Lands to the Several States and Territories which may provide Colleges for the Benefit of Agriculture and the Mechanic Arts," The Morrill Act Provided each state with 30,000 acres of federal land. The land was then sold by the states to help fund public colleges. 69 colleges were funded by the land grants

    The migration of the Texas Longhorn cattle from south Texas to the northern plains and the Kansas railheads in the decade following the War Between the States was the largest movement of animals under the control of man in the history of the world.The first cattle to set foot in North America and the only breed of cattle to evolve without human management, the Texas Longhorn is virtually a genetic gold mine.

    Best know for leading greater than 200 of his troops to their death in the battle of the Little Bighorn In June 1876. This battle is also known as "Custard's last stand." This battle still remains one of the most memorable battles in U.S history

    Dawes Act
    This act split up reservations held communally by Native American tribes into smaller units and distributed these units to individuals within the tribe.This law changed the legal status of the Native Americans. They went from tribal members to people subject to federal laws
  • Sitting Bull

    Sitting Bull
    He was a Native American Cheif. He united the Sioux tribes in their struggle for survival on the Great Plains. After some years in Canada Sitting Bull surendered to the U.S. forces. This was because his people were suffering very badly and struggling with starvation. In 1890 Sitting Bull was killed while being arrested by U.S police forces and agents
  • Battle of the Wounded Knee

    Battle of the Wounded Knee
    This battle left over 150 native Americans dead. In 1973, members of the American Indian Movement occupied Wounded Knee for 71 days to protest conditions on the reservation. Ultimately, this is what led up to the battle.
