The group that killed him fled and Austro-Hungary demanded that serbia capture the group to be prosecuted. Serbias efforts were not seen as enough so the Austro hungarians declared war on serbia.

On this day germany declares war on France. They demand travel through Belgium to attack but the Begians refuse. On the next day Great Britain declares war on Germany and Germany declares war on Belgium.

The British Lusitania is sunk by a German submarine. It was full of passengers and 128 of them were American. This was 1 major event that brought the US into the war. Also, at this point almost all the countries are at war with each other. There is a german naval blockade of the UK and British blockade of Germany. Many battles have been fought, won and lost, and territories gained and lost again.

The Zimmerman telgram is intercepted and interpreted by the British intelligence. It was a request for mexico to join the German cause in return for Texas and other parts of American territory. It was another reason that the Americans joined the war.

At this point the Germans reannounce the use of unrestricted marine warfare. After the Lusitania was sunk they restricted it only to warships to appease the Americans. This is anther reason that the Americans joined the war. The image shows a german U boat.

On this day the americans entered world war 1 to fight the triple entente. The picture shows American troops marching. Diplomatic relations with Austro-Hungary, and Germany are severed. The Americans send in over 2 million troops.

The Russians are officially out of the war. The US has declared war on Austro-Hungary. The Germans with the eastern front now peaceful can move their troops to the west to reinforce the front on that side. The picture shows how much land the Russians gave to the Germans.

The treaty of Versailles ended the war. It was signed on June 28. It had harsh consequences for the Germans and some think that it led to Hitler starting world war 2.
