Wealth Influences on Colonization

  • Jamestown, Virginia

    In 1607 Jamestown, Virginia was the first successful English Colony that the sole purpose of colonizing it was to make money.
  • Headight System

    In 1618, the Headright system was created, so that more money can be made by colonizers. This system gave anyone 50 acres of land to anyone a settler paid to come over.

    In 1619, the first shipment of African American slaves arrived in Virginia, this obviously contributed to wealth because the more work that can be done, can make more money.

    The colony would have continued to struggle to find something the people really loves, so the Natives gave them tobacco. By 1624 Virginia was producing more than 200,000 pounds of tobacco. Tobacco greatly contributed to the weath of Virginia.

    Maryland was the second Chesapeake Colony that was formed for Catholics by Cecilius Calvert who wanted to make money to benefit for himself and his family.
