By 1794 froniter farmers' resentment of the whiskey tax expolded into rebellion in western pennsylvannia. Federal officials sent arcross the mountains to collect the excise tax were waylaidby bands of whiskey boys. -
John Adams become President
John Adams was elected in 1769, the second president by a slim margin.Runner up Thomas Jefferson became Vice President. Adams was a scholar who thrived on an intellectual diet of books and ideas. -
Alien and Sedition Acts
One of the laws made it more diffcult for an alien to become a citizen by extending the naturalization period. Another empowered the president to expel any alien. -

Louisiana Purchse
In 1803, that year France offered to sell the Louisiana to the united states for the sum of 15$ million dollars. This vast but explored territory stretched from Mississippi River west to the Rocky Mountains and from Canada south to Texas. The boundaries were vague, the acquisition of Louisiana, Jefferson knew, would double the size of the united states. -
