British General John Burgoyne defeated the American forces, led by Horatio Gates and Benedict Arnold. Burgoyne attacked the American for a second time, but was defeated and forced to retreat. The Battle of Saratoga was the turning point for the American Revolution, and it was the reason why France sent troops, money, and naval forces.
