    Britannica Link for additional info Vietnminh formed in China and it was an organiziation that lead to independence for the Vietnamese from the French. It began after WW2 the french occupied Vietnam and the Vietnamese wanted the goverment to be a free state the french did not reconize it as one so the vietnamese created Vietminh.

    Ho Chi Minh rose to power and became the prime minister of The Democratic Republic of Vietnam with his Communist party called Viet Minh in North Vietman.
  • Dien Bien Phu

    Dien Bien Phu
    The was one of the first battles in Vietnam between the French and the Vietminh. The war last 54 days March to May 7, 1954. Due to the French's poor decision they made earlier they decided to create an operation to support the soldiers at Dien Bien Phu. This was so that they could cut off Vietminh's supply lines. In doing so they would draw the Vietminh out to battle and destroy them. However the Vietminh ultimatly won the battle, but the Geneva Accords were enacted shortly after.

    After the Geneva Accords the Vietminh became the government of North Vietnam. Then the communists began to group up in the north while non-commi's grouped up in the south. In 1954 due to the Saigon-Sholon Peace committee the Vietcong came in to existence. The Vietcong had gurrillia and regular forces in their army.

    The Geneva Accords was a peace treaty in the summer of 1954 between France and Vietnam. It showed actually how bad the cold war was. In 1956 it was determined that Vietnam would have an national election to reunite the country. However the U.S did not support this idea due to the belief that the communist party would have to much power.

    The war lasted for 30 years. The U.S had a massive presence in the Vietnamese War. Many Americans did not approve of America's presence in Vietnam, and many people remeber the war in vietnam as one of the significant battles fought in the cold war.

    In 1955 the U.S goverment helped South Vietnam socially, economically and politically to rise up and become the Republic of Vietnam. Shortly after Ngo Dinh Diem came along an anti communist took control. He claimed that the communists were attacking the south's goverement and took America's help and counter attacked the communists in 1957, and had many different reforms take place, which in turn caused the north to react and create an army basically to "free" the south.

    Agent Orange was a code name for a herbicide used by the American's during Vietnam. Agent orange was used to clear foliage. It was used in 1962 - 1971, and the U.S sprayed 20,000,000 gallons of it to clear the jungle, crops to find the enemy. However Agent Orange had a variety of effects on a human being and the environment, such as causing increase cancer rates, respitory disorders, and it destroyed the environment.

However the second attack did not occur and the U.S government used this for a poltical cover for the resolution that gave the president war power.

    After the Gulf of Tonkin the Americans wanted a more agressive attack, so they created Operation Rolling Thunder. The Americans demonstrated their air supremacy, with 100 US and VNAF planes. They droped bombs in Xom Bang, which demoralized the north, Lasted until Oct, 1968

    Series of trails used by the north to get their troops into the south. Also for supplies, and the north created "dummy" trails to confuse the U.S. Due to the foliage the north had great cover.

    The Tet offensive was an attack by the North. The offensive had three phases, and the entire point was to catch the south and their allies the U.S off guard. The north managed to catch them off guard, but they were beaten back, and it showed the Americans and South Vietnam how they needed to be more agressive.

    My Lai was a massacre that took place in Vietnamese village. American troops were sent to a village for a search and destroy mission, and Lt. William Calley was in command. The killing started and 300 unarmed civilians were killed brutally.

    January 1st 1975, north troops advanced towards the south. U.S presence in Vietnam was decreasing due to pressure at home politically and socially. Once the U.S left Vietnam the north's offensive became unstoppable, and then Saigon fell. The south fell to the communists, and they joined them.
