In Geneva Switzerland the Geneva Conference took place to discuss peace returning to Indochina. The conference produced a set of documents that temporarily separated Vietnam into two zones, north Viet Minh and the south governed by the State of Vietnam.

In November 1953 the French occupied a small mountain outpost on the Vietnamese border called Dien Bien Phu. On March 12 the first assault by the Viet Minh and despite their air support the French held only 2 square miles by late April. After 57 days of siege on May 7, the French position had been compromised.

The Vietnam police and the Army of the Republic of Vietnam poured chemicals on the heads of praying Buddhist protesters. Buddhist Monk Thích Quảng Đức Burned himself to death in protest of Diems policies.

Following the overthrow of the the government in south Vietnam, Ngo Dihn Diem was captured by soldiers and killed. While his death brought much celebration the United States became more heavily involved in trying to stabilize the south Vietnamese government.
