    Following the end of WWII, Ho Chi Minh announces Vietnam's independence from France just hours after Japan surrenders. At this time, The Viet Minh also seizes power for Northern Vietnam

    Viet Minh Attacks on French Outposts
    In 1954, the Viet Minh forces an attack on isolated French military outposts in the town of Dien Bien Phu. The attempt to take over these outposts lasts nearly two months. During this time, the French government also agrees on taking part in peace talks in Geneva. At the Geneva conference, Vietnam splits into North and South Vietnam.

    Infiltration to the South
    Weapons and men from North Vietnam start infiltrating South Vietnam. This is the beginning of the 1959-63 phase of the Vietnam war and at this time also known as the Guerilla war. The North Vietnamese infiltrating into the South also triggered the Golf of Tonklin incident which then led to many US soldiers getting involved in the Vietnam war.

    Number of US Military rises in South Vietnam
    Three years after the infiltration of North Vietnam into South Vietnam and the start of the Guerilla war phase, the number of US Military support in South Vietnam rises to 12,000 militants. The US Military sent these people over to support them against the fight with North Vietnam in hopes that it would eventually end and both sides would work something out.

    Tet Offensive was the name of a combined assault carried out by the Viet Cong and the North Vietnamese army on the US troops. More than 500 civilians die in the US massacre at My Lai. Thousands are killed by communist forces during their occupation of the city of Hue. A year after this the number of US militants climbs to a whopping 200,000.

    Ho Chi Minh DIes
    Vietnamese communist leader Ho Chi Minh dies due to a congestive heart failure which then prompts President Nixon of the United States to step in. Nixon beings to gradually reduce the amount of US ground troops in Vietnam as the domestic public opposition to the war grows in Vietnam. The reduction of US ground troops marks the halfway point of peace coming to Vietnam.

    Talks between US and Hanoi Government Start in Paris
    President Nixon's national security advisor, Henry Kissinger and Le Duc Tho representing the Hanoi government start talks in Paris. The talk between the two governments was just the very beginning of peace treaty being signed known as the Paris Peace Accords
  • Peace Treaty is Signed

    Peace Treaty is Signed
    The Paris Peace Accords, AKA the Peace Treaty was signed by both Henry Kissinger and Le Duc Tho to establish peace in Vietnam and end the Vietnam War. The signing of the Peace Treaty ended direct U.S. military combat, and temporarily stopped the fighting between North and South Vietnam.
