U.S. sends military Aid

The United States pledges $15 million in military aid to French. They sent it to the French so they could fight in Vietnam. This was the United States way in supporting the French, to stop communism.

French is Defeated

May 7, 1954

This is a set back for the French as well as the United States. This is a set back in the fight against communism. This event strains the need for more assistance.

Cease Fire

The French peacefully withdraw from Vietnam. At this point there is also a division between North Vietnam and South Vietnam along the 17th parallel.

South takes a stand

Oct 26, 1955

South declares itself Republic of Vietnam. The south is fighting the North from communism rule.

North Vietnam attacks

Aug 2, 1964

North Vietnam attacks United States Destroyers. This is personal to the United States. This events makes American feel like they need to be involved in the war because it was a direct hit to our nation.

U.S. sends troops

The united states sends the first combat troops to Vietnam. The United States is now personally fighting in this war against communism.
