  • Geneva Accords

    Geneva Accords
    From May to July 1954, 7 countries, Vietminh, and South Vietnam met to create a peace agreement. The Geneva Accords stated that Vietnam would be temporarily divided across the 17th parallel.
  • Gulf of Tonkin Resolution

    Gulf of Tonkin Resolution
    The Gulf of Tonkin Resolution gave congressional approval to expand the war in Vietnam. The U.S. destroyer, Maddox, and another destroyer reported to be under attack, but it has now been proven that these reports were false.
  • My Lai Massacre

    My Lai Massacre
    The Charlie Company had been informed that VC guerillas had taken control of Son My. They were then sent on a search and destroy mission. And due to the Charlie Comoany's recent loss of 28 members, their morales were lessening. Although no Viet Cong were present, the men gathered villagers by the hundreds (mostly women and children) and killed/raped them brutally.
  • Tet Offensive

    Tet Offensive
    On the lunar new year (Tet), 70,000 North Vietnamese and Viet Cong troops attacked more than 100 towns in South Vietnam. The U.S. then called for 200,000 troops for a sucsessful counter-attack.
  • Vietnamization introduced

    Vietnamization introduced
    After taking office, Nixon explained a strategy to end the American involvment in the Vietnam War. He said he would do this by transferring all military responsibilities to South Vietnam.
  • Kent State Shooting

    Kent State Shooting
    After announcing that the U.S. was in need of 150,000 more soldiers for the war exoansion in Vietnam, (violent) protests broke out across the nation. In one at Kent State in Ohio, 28 guardsmen opened fired, killing four and wounding nine.
  • Fall of Saigon

    Fall of Saigon
    The capital city of South Vietnam, Saigon, fell to North Vietnamese forces. This event marked the end of the Vietnam War. It is now called Ho Chin Minh City.
