    Japan invaded Vichy-French controlled Indo-China, which included Vietnam.
  • End of the War in Vietnam

    British-Indian and French troops fight the Viet Minh and restore French rule in South Vietnam.
  • Viet Minh Ally with China

    The Viet Minh recieve weapons and military advice from their new ally, China.
  • Battle of Dien Bien Phu

    The French are decisevely defeated at the Battle of Dien Bien Phu.
  • Geneva Conference on Indochina

    The U.S., Britain, China, the U.S.S.R., France and members of both sides of Vietnam attend. They all want to negotiate a solution for Southeast Asia.
  • Death of Military/Religious Leader Ba Cut

    Many of Ba Cuts followers join the Viet Cong.
  • Americans Killed

    American military advisors to South Vietnam were killed.
  • Operation Chopper

    This was the first time U.S. forces participated in major combat in the Vietnam War.
  • Ngo Dinh Diem Dies

    South Vietnamese president Ngo Dunh Diem is executed in a coup.
  • Gulf of Tonkin Incident

    North Vietnamese attack two U.S. destroyers in international waters.
  • Operation Flaming Dart

    Lyndon Johnson orders retalitory U.S. airstrikes against the Vietcong, escalating the conflict.
  • Reinforcements

    Pres. Johnson authorizes the deployment of more U.S. soldiers to Vietnam.
  • Protest

    First antiwar SDS march draws thousands to Washington D.C.
  • Tet Offensive

    North Vietnamese and Viet Cong forces launch the Tet Offensive, attacking around 100 South Vietnamese towns.
  • Two New Tactics

    Nixon orders the secret bombing of Cambodia and also starts Vietnamization, or giving the South Vietnamese more responsibility and withdrawing U.S. troops.
  • Kent State Shootings

    The Ohio National Guard fires on unarmed anti-war college students.
  • Uprsisings in Poland

    Martial law is declared in Poland as people riot over food.
  • Protests

    Five hundred thousand people in Washington and 125,000 in San Francisco march in protest against the Vietnam War.
  • Easter Offensive

    North Vietnam launches what is known in the U.S. as the Easter Offensive, in an attempt to capture a Southern Province. American and the South repel the attack.
  • Paris Peace Accords Signed

    U.S. involvment in the war officially ends with the signing of the Paris Peace Accords.
  • The North Attacks

    With the U.S. out of the picture the North Vietnamese attack the South.
  • Fall of Saigon

    The South Vietnamese Government is unable to stop the Northern Advance and the city of Saigon is taken. All of Vietnam is now practically in Communist control.
