Ho Chi Minh makes Veitnam independent and calls it the Democratic Republic of Vietnam. -
US Gives Money
The US pledges to give France $15 million worth of military aid to help them fight against Vietnam. -
Frances Loses
France losses an important battle called the Battle of Dien Pien Phu. -
Cease-Fire
The Geneva Accords makes a cease-fire. France is to withdrawal from Vietnam and it provides temporary boundaries between North and South Vietnam. -
NLF
The National Liberation Front (NLF) is established in South Vietnam. It also was called the Viet Cong. -
Attack on US Destroyers
North Vietnam attacks two US Destroyers on Aug 2 and Aug 4. They were in international waters and this incident is known as the Gulf on Tonkin Incident. -
Operation Rolling Thunder
The US start sustained aerial bombing on North Vietnam. This proved to be one of the most intense and difficult air battles ever faced. -
Combat Troops
Just a few days after the bombing begins, the first US Combat troops enter Vietnam. -

Soldiers from the US enter the Vietnam town of Mai Tai and kill hundreds of civilians. -

DMZ Crossing
North Vietnam cross the demiltarized zone (DMZ) at the 17th parallel and enters into South Vietnam starting the Easter Offensive. -
Troops are HOME
The last troops in Vietnam are withdrawn and sent back home to the US. -
South Falls
Due to an earlier massive attack from the North, the South never recovered and eventually surrendered to the North Vietnamese communists.
