Period: Jan 1, 1945 to Dec 31, 1975 Vietnam War Timespan Apr 12, 1945 President Roosevelt dies Franklin D. Roosevelt dies Sep 26, 1945 First American Dies in Vietnam Lt. Col. A. Peter Dewey is killed by Vietminh driving a Jeep. He was mistaken for a French Soldier Dec 1, 1953 Eisenhower creates the "Domino Theory" Eisenhower establishes the theory that if one country becomes communist, all of the rest of the South East Asian countries will follow. Period: Apr 26, 1954 to Jun 20, 1954 Geneva Conferance The Geneva Conference was a conference between various countries that ended the French and Vietminh War. Jan 1, 1960 Vietcong Formed South Vietnam creates the National Liberation Front, or Vietcong, to encourage the participation of non-communist people. Nov 8, 1960 Kennedy elected president John F. Kennedy narrowly wins his campaign for president against Richard Nixon. His running mate was Lyndon B. Johnson Nov 22, 1963 President Kennedy assassinated President John F. Kennedy is shot. Vice-president Lyndon B. Johnson is sworn in. Aug 7, 1964 Gulf of Tonkin Resolution The Tonkin Gulf Resolution gave Johnson the power to send troops to Vietnam and retaliate. This Resolution was passed on the 7th of April, 1964. Period: Mar 1, 1965 to Nov 2, 1968 Operation "Rolling Thunder" deployed A large bombing fire campaign against Vietnam officials. Jan 31, 1968 North Vietnamese launch Tet Offensive The Tet Offensive was the turning point of the war. It was when the North Vietnamese launched an attack on the South. This was when America knew we were not going to win quickly. May 4, 1970 Kent State students protest Vietnam War US guards fired into a crowd of Kent State Students protesting the Vietnam War. 4 were killed and 9 were wounded. Jan 17, 1973 Peace Accords signed The Paris Peace Accords were signed, saying that there would be a cease-fire between north and south Vietnam and the US would withdraw our troops. Apr 30, 1975 Last American troops leave Vietnam The last Americans were killed at 4:03 in Vietnam, before they left for home. The war was over and the troops were home. Dec 13, 1982 Vietnam Memorial Dedicated in Washington DC Vietnam war memorial was constructed in 1982. It is a wall with all of the names of the people that died engraved in it.
