    War Powers Act
    The War Powers Act gave more power to the governement, particularly in the Executive Branch. The Act was supposed to limit the power only to states of emergency, but gave to much power to the president during the Vietnam War.
  • Ho Chi Minh Declares Independence

    Ho Chi Minh Declares Independence
    Ho Chi Minh reads the first Declaration of Independence of Vietnam declaring Vietnam independent from all other countries. Only China and Russia recognize Vietnam as its own country.

    U.S. Pledges to Help the French
    The U.S. gives France $15 million as aid for the war over Indochina. This pledge include military leaders and missions.
  • Geneva Confrence

    Geneva Confrence
    The Geneva Conference was a meeting in which the big powers of the Korean War. The goal was to try and unify Korea, and also bring peace in Indochina.
  • Operation Chopper

    Operation Chopper
    American Helicopters fly 1,000 South Vietnamis to perform a sweep of an NFL stronghold near Siagon. This is the first time Americans have taken part in the actual combat against the Vietcong.

    The U.S. deploys agent oragne. Agent Orange was a deofilant in metal containers that was used to strip trees and bushes of leaves. The eact date of deployment is unkonw, but it was first used early in the year of 1962.
  • Gulf of Tonkin Resolution

    Gulf of Tonkin Resolution
    President Johnson informed the public that North Vietnam tropedos destoryed two American destroyers. The public at this point did not know, however, that the destroyers had been helping the South Vietnam in eletronic dtection.

    This was the first attack of the Vietcong against Americans. Vietcong mortars were fired at Bien Hoa Air Base.
  • Operation Rolling Thunder

    Operation Rolling Thunder
    The united States drops almost continuous bombs on North Vietnam. This operation conitnues for nearly three years.
  • U.S. Combat troops

    U.S. Combat troops
    The first combat troops from the United States arrive in Vietnam. War has not been officially declared on Vietnam however.
  • Nepalm is Used

    Nepalm is Used
    The President authorizes the use of neplam in Vietnam against the Vietcong. Nepalm is a petroleum based anti-personal bomb that sends out hundreds of explosive pellets when it hits the ground.
  • Tet Offensive

    Tet Offensive
    North Vietnam launched a suprise attack against South Vietnam. South Vietnam was not prepared for the attack because a "cease fire" had been negotiated for the Vietnam holiday.
  • My Lai Massacre

    My Lai Massacre
    347-504 civillians were killed by United States Company of 1st Battalion, 20th Infantry Regiment, 11th Brigade of the Americal Division. Many of the victims hade been women, children, and elderly people.
  • Vietnamization

    Vietnamization
    The United States starts to withdraw their troops and comence Vietnamization. The U.S. starts withdrawing their troops so the South Vietnam can have more control over the war.

    Kent State Univeristy

    A protest against the war in Vietnam started on May 1st. As the event dragged on over the next few days, the protesters started to become more threatening and increased in violent actions until May 3, when some protesters burned down a bulding. The Ohio National Gaurd was called in to break up the rally, but were meet with resistance. A few Gaurdsmen fired into the cowrd trying to ge them to comply, which resulted in 4 deaths, and 9 who were wounded.

    VideoAbout Kent StateIn response to the President sending troops into Vietnam, many students protested. By May 4 violence was high at Kent State. The Ohio National Gaurd was sent into restore order. Some of the Gaurd fired into the protesters who were gathered which resulted in the death of 4 students and the wounding of 9.
  • 26 Amendment

    26 Amendment
    American men had to register to draft at age 18. They did not like the fact that they may be called into service they had no wish to take part in, by a president they hadn't picked, so the voting age was lowered from 21 to 18.
  • Watergate

    An attempted break-in was dscovered in the Watergate Building. A money trail lead to Nixon, who had tried to cover up the break-in earlier. The scandal forced Nixion to resign, or he would be immpeached.
  • Paris Peace Accords

    Paris Peace Accords
    Peace talks had started between the South Vietnamese and the North. In 19 72 after many deadlocks, a compromise was reacg=hed. Sadly, the fighting did not end when the negotiations were su=igned, but ci=ontinued on for about a year later.
  • U.S. Withdraws Troops

    U.S. Withdraws Troops
    The withdrawal of all U.S. Troops is complete. 19,000 administrators and advisiors, however, are left in Vietnam to help Vietnam's military forces.
  • South Vietnam Surrender

    South Vietnam Surrender
    Also known as the Fall of Siagon, the surrender of South Vietnam marked the end of the Vietnam war and a loss for the United States. After all American troops withdrew of Vietnam, North Vietnamese soldiers captured Siagon, the capitol of South Vietnam. South Vietnam surrendered shortly after.
