    Two U.S. military advisors were killed by Viet Minh guerilla soldiers. It was in a raid in Bien Hoa in south Vietnam. These were non-combat deaths.

    The first american combat death . It was a service man, to many americans this was the start of the war.
  • Diem assination attempt

    Diem assination attempt
    Two south Vietnamese pilots bombed Diem's palace. Diem had escaped the assasination attempt.

    Tonkin Gulf Resolution
    The Gulf of Tonkin resolution gave president Johnson the power to take action against the Viet Cong whenever needed. This was to protect South Vietnam from the Viet Cong. Some people called it the Fight if We Must Resolution.

    The first time american soldiers contacted the Viet Cong on the ground. They were sent to ambush the enemy the get out. This was done so there wasnt any large battles and our men didnt have to hold hostile territory.

    Viet Cong, with the help of North Vietnamese troops, surprised U.S. troops with a series of attacks. Rough fighting continued for months. It turned out bad for the North vietnamese and the Viet Cong, they lost 37,000 fighters. The U.S. lost 2,500 but thats minimal compared to 37,000

    Operation Linebacker
    President Nixon made orders for North Vietnam to be bombed. This was in retaliation to a massive attack by the North Vietnamese.
  • Cease fire in Vietnam

    Cease fire in Vietnam
    South Vietnam, North Vietnam, and United States representatives signed a peace treaty for a cease fire. The U.S. agreed to pull out their troops. South Vietnam's government agreed to let their people decide their future by holding free elections.
