    Chinese Rule

    During this time, Vietnam was a part of Chinese Empire. Vietnam language and religion were hugely influenced by the Chinese. Vietnamese were strongly Buddhist.
  • French Christian Missionaries arrived in Vietnam

    French Christian Missionaries arrived in Vietnam. Vietnam gave them a warm welcome at first, but when they began converting Vietnamese into Christion, Vietnam became hostile towards French.
  • Period: to

    War between Vietnam and French

    The religion conflict in Vietnam became extreme. In 1858, French emperor Napoleon the third sent 14 ships and 2500 troops to vietnam to protect the Chirstians. in 1868, Vietnamese emperor surrendered, made peace treaty with French.
  • Chinese agreed French control over Vietnam

    After a fight between Vietnamese and French, Vietnam signed a peace treaty. The fight became the excuse for French to expand their overseas empire. Eventually, French asked China for their control over Vietnam.
  • French Indo-China was created

    French evantually added Laos and Cambodia to their Overseas Empire and created French Indo-China.
  • Vietnam became a communist country

    Revolution occurred and Vietnam became a communist country.
  • Japan Invasion in Vietnam

    Japan invaded Vietnam and French had surrendered to them.
  • Formation of Vietminh

    Ho saw the opportunity of Vietnam's independence after the war and formed an army, Vietminh to go against Japnese. Vietnam, United States and Soviet Union fought a guerrilla war against the Japanese.
  • Japan Surrendered

    Japan had been bombed by United States and surrendered. After the victory, Ho was sure that Vietnam had now gained independence. He announced Democratic Republic of Vietnam.
  • French returned to Vietnam

    French returned to Vietnam, not accpeting the Democratic Republic of Vietnam. Ho was furious. Vietminh and French ended up having another war. Vietminh were winning.
  • The Battle of Da Bien Phu

    General Navarre on the Vietnam side had decided to end the long lasting war against the French by surrounding the region they must attack with well-constructed trenches. They maintained their siege for 56 days. (During those 56 days, French were constantly bombed by the Vietnamese trenches)
  • French Surrendered

    French had surrendered. French had 2,000 troops dead and 10,000 surrendered. Vietnam had 8000-10,000 soldiers dead. This was the end of French control over Indo-China.
