    France invades Vietnam, making Vietnam a French Colony.

  • The Treaty of Saigon

    The Treaty of Saigon was signed by the French ceding the three southern provinces (Bien Hoa, Gia Dihn, and Dinh Tuong) to the French.
  • Vietnam is Divided

    After the annexation of Vietnam, France divided Veitnam into three regions: Tonkin, Annam, and CoChina China. In addition, to the division, the French used water mangement to open new agricultural land.
  • Ho Chi Minh is Born

    On May 19th, 1890 Ho Chi Minh, revolutionist and leader of North Vietnam, was born. He fought the Japanese, French and United States to gain independence for Veitnam.
  • Vietnam Reformation Society

    Phan Boi Chau founded Viet Nam Duy Tan Hoi (Vietnam Reformation Society).Its objective was to overthrow French colonial rule in Vietnam and establish a democratic republic. The group was one of the first revolutionary societies organised in Vietnam.
  • Vietnam Turned away from Versialle

    In 1919, Ho Chi Minh attempted to meet with President Woodrow Wilson at the Versailles Peace Conference to present a program for Vietnamese rights and sovereignty, but was turned away.
  • Cao Dai Religion Formation

    Cao Dai was a religious movement with a strongly nationalist political background. In its beliefs, Cao Dai draws upon ethical precepts from Confucianism and theories of karma and rebirth from Buddhism, with some influence from Catholicism. The purpose of life is believed to be peace within each individual and harmony in the world. This new religion formed the basis for many nationalism efforts that followed in Vietnam.
  • Indochinese Communist Party Formed

    In 1930, Ho Chi Minh founded the Indochinese Communist Party, also known as the ICP in opposition to colonial rule. The nationalist and moderate socialist political party sought independence from French colonial rule in Vietnam
  • Yen-Bai Uprising

    Yen-Bai was an uprising by Vietnamese soldiers against the French colonial army in the city of Yen Bai in North Vietnam and led by the VNQDD (Vietnamese revolutionary group). The uprising showed the underlying animosity towards the French colonists, and marked a turning point in Indochina. On the night of February 9, two mutinous units of soldiers of the Yen Bai garrison seized the barracks, the railroad station, and several administrative buildings of the city.(Leader NguyenThaiHoc Executed
  • Japanese occupation of Vietnam

    During WW2, the Japanese invaded and took possession of French Indochina. The invasion was done in an attempt to prvent the Republic of China from importing weapons and fuel from IndoChina. During the occupation around 10,000 Japanese soldiers were stationed in Vietnam, mainly around the ports, airfields and important industrial centres. For most of their occupation the Japanese left the French colonial government in place; however most of their power and authority was diminshed.
  • "Viet Minh" created

    In 1941, the League for the Independence of Vietnam was created, named “Viet Minh”. The Viet Minh was a guerrilla force that arose in response to the invasion by Japan during World War II. The communist and nationalist movement was created to obtain independence for Vietnam from France.
  • Provisional Government established

    In August 1945, the Japanese surrender, Vietnam's emperor Bao Dai abdicates, and Ho Chi Minh's guerrillas occupy Hanoi and proclaim a provisional government.
  • Independence of Vietnam

    On September 2, 1945 the Japanese formally surrendered ending World War II in the Pacific. Hours after this occurred,Vietnamese communist Ho Chin Minh declared the independence of Vietnam from France. In his proclamation, Ho Chi Minh paraphrased the American Declaration of Independence in declaring, “ We hold the truth that all men are born equal; the Creator has given inviolable rights life, liberty, and happiness.”
