French colonize Vietnam
Between a multitude of military conquests in 1859-1885, France conquers Vietnam therefore making it part of French Indo-China. The French wanted to colonize Vietnam mainly because they wanted to enlarge their empire. -
Indochineese Communist Party
Ho Chi Minh, a young man, begins to work for independence. He thought the communist party would be the best route. In the 1930's, he organized the Indochinese Communist Party to stage protests against the French. This program failed, and many of the followers ended up behind bars. -

Hoping for Independence
Near the end of World War 2, Ho Chi Minh hoped French rule would end in his country. He founded another group known as the Vietminh League, a group that wanted independence. Unfortunately, at the end of the war, France began to regain colonial control. -
Nationalism
After World War 2 and surviving the Japanese Invasion, nationalism was everywhere in Vietnam. Many wanted to reorganize the country under a popular nationalist named Ho Chi Minh. -

Ho Chi MInh and his forces begin the first Indochina war against the French. They have plenty of support, escpecially in the south. -

War With France Ends
Wanting control of their own country, the Vietnamese win the war with France surrendering in 1954. They gave full control of the country to Ho Chi Minh. -

The counrty is seperated into a north and south section with Ho chi MInh in the Communist north and the UN mainly the united states in the south. -

Citizens are to vote for what type pf goverment they want but the US fears they will choose Communism and pulls out. -

Troops Arrive to Fight Vietcong
The first soliders arrive in Vietnam to fight in the war. However miltary 'advisors' have been there since the 50s. They begin having difficult fighting in the thick jungles due to the Vietcongs( the current army of Vietnam) guerilla tactics. -
War Ends as US Pulls Out/ Republic of Vietnam
Due to protest from americans everywher the last US helicopters pull out of Vietnam after millions of casualties and deaths. The communist party invaded the south the next day and they were named the indepent nation of the republic of Vietnam. -
