    Japanese invade Vietname and Vichy France.

  • Japan Loses Control of Vietnam, Viet-Mihn takes over Vietnam in the August revolution

  • Ho Chi Minh officially declares Vietnam independent in front of 500,000 Vietnamese supporters in Hanoi

  • French Handover

    Victorious countries from World War II felt that Vietnam belonged to France.
    USSR asked Ho Chi Minh to negotiate with the French

    French Indochina War

    The Viet-Minh started using Guerilla warfare tactics to wear down French forces.
    Tactics consisted mostly of hit and run attacks from the dense Jungles of Vietnam.
    The French held control of the Cities.
    The French had supreior firepower in terms of Artillery and Air Power.
    The problem was that these weawpons were only useful in open pitched battles and not in hit and run guerilla attacks from the Jungle.

  • French Handover

    In November, France took full control of Vietnam and ousts the Viet-Minh.

  • Guerilla Warfare Tactics

    These tactics proved highly successful and by 1954 the Viet-Minh had control of most of the countryside.

  • Dien Bien Phu

    -French creates a modern fortress in teh Northern jungle area of Dien Bien Phu.
    -They try and tempt the Viet Minh into an open battle so they can use their superior firepower
    -The French tactics proved unsuccessful

    Vietnam Divided

    -One of the conditions of the ceasefire between France and Vietnam was that elections would be held within 2 years
    -People were given 300 days to travel to their chosen region
    -Members of the Viet-Minh tended to go North and Catholics tended to go south
    -Ho Chi Minh took control in the North and started to bring in communist policies
    -Ngo Dinh took over in the South and started to recieve alot of money from the USA

  • Vietnam Divided

    Vietnam is divided along the 17th parallel and a De Militarised Zone was set up.

    -South gets Political and financial support from the USA
    -North gets policital and financial suport from the USSR and Chine & also gets provided with arms

  • Natioinal Front of the Liberation of South Vietnam was established

    -Known as the Viet Cong (south vietnamese who wanted a united communist vietnam)
    -They were supplied with weapons and men from North Vietnam through jungle roads in Laos and Cambodia
