Vietnam By Ty Plummer Jan 1, 1940 Vietnam conflict The France colonial powers ruled the Vietnamese for more than six decades. The Vietnamese people did not like having France rule there country. Japan invaded Vietnam and now Vietnam had two foreign powers occupying them. Jan 1, 1941 Ho Chi Minh Then Ho Chi Minh arrived back in Vietnam and went to a cave in Northern Vietnam and he established a headquarters and his goal was to get rid of the France and Japan occupiers. Sep 26, 1945 the first American to die On September 26, 1945 Lt. Col. A. Peter Dewey was the first American soldier to be killed in Vietnam he was mistaken for a Frenchman. Peter Dewey was the son of former Illinois congressman and Major Dale R. Buis and Master Sergeant Chester M. Ovnand were killed in 1959 during a guerilla attack at Bienhoa. Sep 7, 1966 Black horse Regiment On September 7, 1966 the Black Horse Regiment had 3,762 troops land at Vung Tau, South Vietnam. When they landed at Vung Tau they establishing a base camp and they began a reconnaissance in force operations directed to the suspected concentrations of Viet Cong’s. This is one example of the troops that were in Vietnam. Jan 8, 1967 Operation cedar falls On January 8, 1967 America forces begin Operation Cedar Falls. This was intended to drive Vietcong forces from the iron Triangle, a 60 square mile area lying between the Saigon River and Route 13. Nearly 16000 American troops and 14000 South Vietnamese troops moved in to the iron Triangle. Jan 28, 1968 Tet offensive January 28, 1968 Tet is a different way to say happy New Year in Vietnam. On New Year’s Day both North and South Vietnam called a truce so both of them could celebrate New Year’s Day. Then on New Year’s Day the North Vietnam launched a stunning offensive, attacking almost every major city in South Vietnam.
