    The assassination of Archduke Franz Ferdinand
    The assassination of Archduke Franz Ferdinand is known to have started World War 1. Him and his wife were killed by a man named Gavrilo Princip who was arrested immediately after the murder. Ferdinand and his wife were shot during a parade going through Sarajevo to the Town Hall. The car they were in sped to get medical help. Sophie Ferdinand died before they could get there, Franz died shortly after. The Austria-Hungary government saw it has an offensive threat and an attack on their country.

    July 1914 is known as the month that changed the world. Russia began full mobilization after the attack on Serbia by Austria. Russia was loading up on men and weapons. They were preparing to fight in the what would soon be known as the “Great War”. Russia mobilizing was such a big deal because it was making people realize that there was going to be a war.

    German and France had declared war on eachother on August 3rd 1914. Germany overthrew Belgium on August 4th 1914. Belgium wanted to keep peace in the country. Germany wanted the total opposite, but the British made sure that didn’t happen. Germany offered to pay back whatever cost if Belgium would let them by.

    British employ first tanks ever used
    During the battle of Somme the British used tanks for the first time against the Germans. The tanks were too slow and too unreliable that ended in many mechanical breakdowns. However commanders saw that it was still a new tool to warfare and was worth the “occasional” breakdown. The tanks were very powerful and useful tool in the war. Since they were so new and powerful the military kept using them.

    On January 16th 1917 German secretary Arthur Zimmerman sent a message in code to the german ambassador Heinrich von Eckardt in Mexico. The list had instructions for Heinrich to go to Mexico's President to form an allegiance during the war. Room 40 “decoded” the message and sent it to the United States. It was made public so that everyone knew about it. It was all over the newspapers and radios.

    Wilson enters war
    On April 2nd asked Congress to declare war on Germany. He wanted to declare war because Germany had violated its pledge of not to drive unrestricted submarine warfare in the Mediterranean. His other reason was because Germany tried to get Mexico to go against United States in an alliance with Germany. On April 4th Congress voted to declare war on Germany. The United States declared war on Austria Hungary on December 7th 1917.

    Russia and Germany make peace
    On March 3rd 1918 Bolshevik Russia signed the Treaty of Brest-Litovsk. This gave Polish and Baltic territories, the Ukraine and Finland independence. The talk of a treaty started when Germany declared independence from Russia which started battles on the Eastern front. Armistice day however doomed Germany, resulting Russia regaining Poland and parts of the Baltics.

    Cantigny was a town on a high point in France. The battle was led by a former football player named Colonel Hanson Ely. His men were well trained but not prepared for the power of the Germans weapons, such as tanks. The Americans eventually were using flame throwers that blew the Germans defense out of place. 900 people died, out of the 1600 people injured.

    Albert joined the war at the age of the 19. He was drafted with 8500 other men. He arrived to the war in France on a ship. He was in the 36th Division of the 142nd infantry.
  • Battle of Mihiel

    Battle of Mihiel
    On September 12th 1918 the AEF launched it’s first major offensive operation as an Independent. After helping French forces during multiple battles, the AEF decided to have headquarters in Saint-Mihiel. Germany was part of the attack on Saint-Mihiel, foul weather played a big role as well. The American forces moved South and joined the British and French forces and took down Germany.

    Albert went into the trench for the first time on Oct 1st 1918. He was running out of amuntition. He was unprepared and shocked. This is how most of the young men felt.

    The weather was terrible. He went up for an attack but it wasn't succesful at all. Attacking Germany was also unsuccessful.

    A gas shell was thrown into where he was and he couldn't get his mask on in time, so he was sent to the field hospital. He was filled up with medication and survived.

    He has finally recieved a meal instead of eating trash off the floor, he could finally clean up, wash his clothes, and have a good sleep. Not a lot of soilders could get this kind of rest.

    World War I ended on the 11th hour, on the 11th day, of the 11th month. At 5:00 am Germany signed an armistice agreement. The war left 9 million soldiers dead, and 21 million wounded. Also 5 million civilians died from, disease, starvation, or exposure. World war I is known as the war to end all wars, and the great war.
