    Aosta was married to Princess Hélène of Orléans. They had two sons together named Amedeo and Aimone. Both of their sons married to princesses.
  • Beginning of his Career

    Beginning of his Career
    Aosta started his career in the Italian Army at Naples. He came into the army as a commander. Soon his title as commander would move up.
  • Spark of the War

    Spark of the War
    The spark of the war was the assassination of Archduke Francis Ferdinand from Austria. He was assassinated by a terrorist group known at the Black Hand from Serbia. Austria- Hungary immediately blamed Serbia for this, starting a chain of events leading to the war.

    This is when the first world war started. It lasted a little over four years. Millions of people died over the course of these four years.
  • Battle of the Marne

    Battle of the Marne
    Battle of the Marne lasted about 6 days. Germany had some advancements on their side. These advancements lead to a stalemate and trench warfare.

    "War Zone"
    Germany declares a war zone around Great Britain. This meant that Germany would destroy every enemy vessel found in the water. Germany stated that passengers and the crews wouldn’t be safe in the zone.
  • Sinking of the Lusitania

    Sinking of the Lusitania
    German U- boats sunk the Lusitania on this day. The Lusitania was a British ship, and when it was sunk 128 Americans died. This is one of the reasons the United States joined the war.

    Italy declared war on Germany and Austria on this day. They decided to enter the war because of the secret Treaty of London. The treaty stated that it would be promised much land.

    Battle of Verdun
    The battle of Verdun begins on this day. It is known as one of the longest battles of the war. It ended on December 16, 1916.
  • Battle of Jutland

    Battle of Jutland
    The Germans were using codes that they thought were secured against the British. Little did they know, the British could read the codes. So the Germans thought they were going to surprise the British but to their surprise, the British were ready.
  • Success Along the Isonzo River

    Success Along the Isonzo River
    Aosta was responsible for the Italian success along this river. He and his army had finally captured Gorizia. They also were able to establish an Italian bridgehead across the river.
  • Unrestricted Subamarine Warfare

    Unrestricted Subamarine Warfare
    Germany resumed its unrestricted submarine warfare campaign at this time. When the U.S. demanded that they end their submarine warfare the first time, Germany did not want to accept this. In the end, they brought it back in 1917 and put everything they had at stake to be victorious.

    The British tanks took victory in Cambrai. This is when tanks were first used in these forces. The British believed that some earlier problems with the tanks would be overcome once it would be used in the battle field.
  • Appointed Marshal

    Appointed Marshal
    Following the war, Aosta was appointed Marshal of Italy. He was appointed by Benito Mussolini. With this promotion, Aosta was able to lead the Italian Army to many more victories.
  • Death of Aosta

    Death of Aosta
    After Aosta had died, his will stated that he will be buried at the military cemetery Redipuglia. He was entitled the Duke of Aosta bridge in Rome. There was also a cruiser named after him which was given to the Soviet Union after World War II.
