Balboa was born in Jerez de los Caballeros, Spain in the year 1475.

In 1500, Balboa decided to embark on his first voyage to America along with Juan de la Casa and Rodrigo de Bastida.

Balboa's path in America started when he crossed the Caribbean coasts from the east of Panama, along the Colombian coasts, through the Gulf of Uraba torward Cabo de la Vela. He continued to explore the north-east of South America, until they didn't have enough men and sailed to Hispaniola.

After a few years of Exsploring America, Balboa settled in Hispaniola to search for new recruits. Balboa resided there for several years as a planter and pig farmer.

In 1508, the king of Spain launched the conquest Tierra Firme. He told Balboa to create to new territories in the region of Cabo de la Vela.

In 1509, Balboa and his dog Leonico went away on a boat going from Santo Domingo to San Sebastian as a stowaway.

In 1510, he discovered the frst European settlement in South America-the town of Saint Maria.

Balboa died on January 12th, 1519 in the town of Darien on the the Isthmus of Panama. He was beheaded by Pedro Arias de Avila. Avila killed him because he was jealous of how Balboa organized the country better than him.
