Dwight Eisenhower made the Southeast Asia Treaty Organization, this aided anti-communist leader Ngo Dinh Diem in consolidating power in Saigon. Although Dwight sent not troops to Vietnam he did authorize military aid to the French. -
Concerning Communism
China became communist in 1949 and communists were in control of North Vietnam. This got the US's attention and made them afraid that communism would spread to South Vietnam and then the rest of Asia. We then sent money, supplies and military advisers to help the South Vietnamese Government. -
JFK in Vietnam War
JFK increased military aid to South Vietnam without committing U.S. combat troops. He hoped this would help against Viet Cong. -
Agent Orange
Agent Orange was a "class of color-coded herbicides that U.S. forces" used to clear area in Vietnam. This was to defoliate trees and shrubs and kill food crops that were providing cover and food to opposition forces. -

Diem was not a good leader towards his people, refused to give peasants land, was against buddhism and treated them poorly. Because of this Vietnam people were rebelling against him. In 1963, President John F Kennedy sent 16,000 military ‘advisers’ to help the South Vietnamese army. Diem’s Government was overthrown. -

After Diem's death the US became more involved with the war. With Diem's death US hoped that there would be more opposition towards Viet Cong. -
Lynden B Johnson
In 1964 LBJ escalated the US relations to the Vietnam war by sending America into a full-scale military conflict against Vietnam. This was after the The Gulf of Tonkin incident, giving him the reason to escalate things. -
The Gulf Of Tonkin
The Gulf Of Tonkin Incident occurred when North Vietnamese ship supposedly attacked US ships. President LBJ claimed the United States did nothing to provoke these two attacks and that North Vietnam started it. This started the US's involvement in the Vietnam War. -
Rolling Thunder
President Johnson ordered the sending of 3,500 US Marines to South Vietnam in Operation Rolling Thunder. During this operation the US dropped 643,000 tons of bombs on Vietnam. However, nearly 900 US aircraft were lost. At this point we are trying to win the war but not involve other countries into it. -
President Nixon In Vietnam
Nixon's plan with Vietnam was to end the US involvement in Vietnam War by slowly giving Vietnam more supplies and taking out US troops.
