    Event Summary: The Haymarket Riot started as a rally to show support of the strike for an eight hour work day. The Police became involved and an unknown person threw a dynamite bomb into the crowd. Seven or eight officers died and at least four civilians were killed. This riot is an example of how Unions have changed over the century to function peacefully.

    Summary: On March 25th, 1911 125 factory workers of the Triangle Shirtwaist Factory died in a fire that started on the 8th floor. People were locked into the floors, and could not reach the stairway. The fire escapes collapsed and the fire hoses did not work. This event brought the beginings of laws on stable working conditions.

    Summary: On June 28, 1914 Serbian Nationalist Gavrilo Princip shot the heir to the Austro-Hungarian throne. This resulted in war between Austria-Hungary and Serbia. Germany joined the side of Austria-Hungary. Russia joined Serbia. France, being an ally of Russia joined with Britain. And all at once Europe was at war with itself.

    Summary: On April 22 1915 the German army launched 150 tons of chlorine gas at the French army. It was the first successful attack of chemical warfare. Germany had attempted to subdue Russian troops with the gas but it had been to cold, and the gas had liquefied. On the Western Front, however, the gas killed 5,000 within ten minutes. The Idea of chemical warfare was and still is horrific.

    Summary: The Virgin Islands are an unusual example of the U.S. purchasing land from another country. In the early 20th century the U.S. would more commonly have to force its way into a nation. The Islands were purchased from Denmark for 25 million dollars and were renamed the United States Virgin Islands.

    Summary: The bank holiday stated that from March 6 to March 10 the only thing a bank was allowed to do was make change. This gave FDR time to pass the Emergency Banking Act. Now the president could assist banks that weren't solvent and reopen ones that were. After the holiday was over the trust in banks had been restored. A billion dollars was restored to the banking system by April and deposits finally exceeded withdrawals.

    Summary: Huey Long was the greatest political opponent to FDR. He was assassinated a year before he could run for president. He had stirred the nation with his "share our wealth" campaign. He was killed by Dr. Carl Weiss, the son-in-law of a political opponent.

    Summary: France and Britain declared war on Germany in response to the invasion of Poland. The war would claim 60 million lives, about 2.5% of the population. The terrible slaughter of Jews, gypsies, homosexuals, communists and the physically disabled was horrific. It would take another two years for the United States to enter the battle.

    Summary: The USSR stopped sending supplies to the sectors of Berlin not under Soviet control. The U.S. responded by airlifting food, coal, and other supplies to the people of Berlin. The blockade had been created to force the power of the three western controlled parts of the city to be given to the Soviets.

    In September of 1957 it was decided that nine black teenagers would attend the previously all white Central High School, in an attempt to integrate the school. The students were protected by the national guards by angry mobs. They were bullied through the whole year. This was one of the first tries to integrate a school and even though they were treated terribly, the Little Rock nine will always be representatives of strength and social equality.

    Summary: Medgar Evers was a popular civil rights activist. He was involved in the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People. He helped organize boycotts for the NAACP and worked for integrstion in restrooms. After multiple assassination attempts Medgar Evers was shot in the back. He was buried in Arlington National Cemetery.

    Summary: 4 girls were killed on September 15th 1963 when members of the Ku Klux Klan threw a bomb into the church, a local gathering point for civil rights activities. Birmingham Alabama was often thought of as the most segregated city in the country. Over 50 bombings against black homes and gathering places had taken place since WWI. The September 15th blast caused a string of civil rights movements in the south.

For 444 days the hostages were hidden. This is an unfortunate example of what happens when the U.S. government interfers in a country with ill-intentions.

    Anti-Communism is the opposition to communism. The greatest win for Anti-communists was in December, 1991. Russia declared its independence and the USSR was no more. The Soviet Union had been the cause of the communism spread through Europe after WWII. Anti- communists were usually capitalists and were afraid that the communist regime would spread over the world, giving the USSR immense power. This anti-communism vs. communism was also the cause of the Cold War, which ended in 1991.

    Summary:The 1994 elections resulted in a majority of republicans in the House of Congress and, for the first time in forty years, the House of Representatives. Newt Gingrich was elected speaker of the House of Representatives in return for his help in achieving this majority. Gingrich tried to convince Clinton to support cuts in social spending. Polls showed support for the president from Americans during the Gingrich vs. Clinton stalemate.

After killing 12 and injuring 27 they commited suicide. It was America's first major school shooting. The causes were blamed on the American SOciety. Kids watched t.v. shows and movies and played video games that displayed too much violence. To prevent school shootings exposure to violence in media should be stopped.

The 21st century has brought a speed of economic growth, previously thought impossible. China and India are some countries that will be joining the U.S. as influences of power on the rest of the world. Cultures will change with this increase of globalization.

    Anti-Semitism is the prejudice, hatred, or discrimination felt toward Jews because of they are Jewish.. It is believed that the first anti-Semite thoughts and actions were based on the belief that the Jews crucified Jesus. One of the strongest display of anti-Semitism was WWII. In Nazi Germany the 1935 Nuremburg Laws defined who a Jew was and took their citizenship. This is one of the largest displays of a government incorporating anti-Semitism into a written law.
