Columbus, on a voyage to the East Indies, landed on an island in the New World. What he "discoverd" was what we know now as the Bahamas. Columbus thought that he was in the East Indies (Asia) when he landed, but he highly underestimated the size of the globe and was in a completely different place. http://www.enchantedlearning.com/explorers/page/c/columbus.shtml

    Michel-Guillaume de Crèvecoeur's Question
Michel-Guillaume de Crèvecoeur was a French settler in the American colonies. His question was, "What then is the American, this new man?" He asked this because unlike European countries there were many different types of settlers in America that there wasn't a single ethnicity to call them. This leads up to the question, "What is the true American Identity".

    Declaration Of Independence
America is now claiming its independence from Britian. The Declaration of Independence was reported on June 28th of 1776 and a vote for it was schelduled for July. The Declaration was a product of the Second Continental Congress. This is where John Hancock's signature became famous. I believe this is an idea rather than an event because it was a system of laws that were made instead of certain event that happend in time.

    Revolutionary Change (again)
Though the Declaration is already on this timeline, I feel as if it should have a second place in here. Not only was the making and signing of the Declaration an event, but it was also an idea. An idea that made it possible for people to make their own form of government instead of being ruled by just on person, like a king. This idea lead to the formation of the American Government, which evetuallt lead to the Republican and Democratic parties.
