    War of 1812

    The War of 1812 was a war between the U.S. and Great Britain. The U.S. declared war on Great Britain over British violations of U.S. maritime rights by order from President James Madison. The war was officially ended by the Treaty of Ghent.
    I believe this event was a Reckless decision due to the U.S. being overconfident in beating the British as it did last time.
    President James Madison's foreign policy was to resume world trade with the exclusion of trade with England and France.

    Monroe Doctrine

    The Monroe Doctrine was a policy that warned European powers not to attempt on colonizing any nation in the Western Hemisphere. U.S. government was worried European powers would intrude on U.S. influence by colonizing in the Western Hemisphere.
    I believe this policy was a Growing Sense of U.S. Potential decision due to the U.S. wanting to stop interference in the Americas.
    President James Madison's foreign policy was to close the Western Hemisphere from European colonization or intervention.

    Mexican American War

    The Mexican-American War was a war between the U.S. and Mexico. Caused by territorial disputes and the annexation of Texas. The Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo ended the Mexican-American War. The U.S. wanted to expand its territory so it made the decision to fight in the war.
    I believe this event was an Expansionistic decision since the U.S.
    was trying to expand its territory.
    President James K. Polk's foreign policy revolved around the U.S. desire for additional territory in North America.

    The Trent Affair

    The Trent Affair was a political incident. Pres. Lincoln sent a ship to intercept the Trent, carrying two diplomats, and capture them. Didn't want to go to war with Britain so the men were returned.
    I believe this event is a Clear sense of Limitations' decision due to the U.S. deciding not to go to war with Britain.
    President Abraham Lincoln was involved in the Trent Affair. Didn't get involved with Britain because of his own civil war. He was looking out for the best interest of our country.

    Spanish American War

    The Spanish-American War, a war between the U.S. and Spain due to the explosion of the U.S.S. Maine, Yellow Journalism, and Cuba's independence. The Treaty of Paris ended the war and gave the U.S power over Cuba, Guam, and the Philippines
    I believe that the event was an Our core values decision due to the U.S. supporting Cubans independence.
    President William McKinley's goal was to expand US territory and to have control over different parts of the world.
  • Annexation of Hawaii

    Annexation of Hawaii

    The U.S. wanted to make Hawaii part of the U.S. territory but the native people were against it., so the U.S. forcefully took Hawaii. The U.S. annexed Hawaii due to political, military reasons and to expand its territory.
    I believe that this event was Our core values decision due to the issues over the core values in the annex of Hawaii that we used to establish our country.
    President William McKinley's goal was to expand US territory and to have control over different parts of the world.

    Panama Canal

    The Panama Canal is a waterway in Panama that connects the Atlantic Ocean with the Pacific Ocean. In 1904, Pres. Theodore Roosevelt took over the construction of the canal. The U.S. wanted to build it to ship goods quickly and cheaply between the Atlantic and Pacific coasts.
    I believe that this event is an Exclusively Expansionism decision due to the U.S building the canal to increase the economics of the country.
    Theodore Roosevelt's policy was for the U.S. to stay strictly neutral.

    World War I

    World War I, a global war originating in Europe caused by Mutual Defense Alliances, Imperialism, Militarism, Nationalism, and the assassination of Archduke Franz Ferdinand. Germany signed an agreement for peace, which caused the fighting to stop.
    I believe this event is a Reckless decision due to all the countries that were involved going to war with each other.
    President Woodrow Wilson's foreign policy was Moral Diplomacy: the best way to maintain order was through “moral example”.
