US and Georgia History

  • Hat Act

England enacted the Hat Act which prohibited the making of hats within the colonies and of exporting/importing hats between colonies. The act was an attempt to financially assist British hat makers as their export sales were drastically reduced in the early 1730s.
  • Founding of Georgia

James Oglethorpe petitioned King George of England for a land charter to establish the colony of Georgia south of the Savannah River. A board of Trustees would govern the colony made up of impoverished colonists. The colony would also serve as a military buffer between Spanish Florida and the other colonies.
