    The United States purchased the Louisana Territory from France for $ 15 million dollars. This territory includes moder-day Arkansas, Oklahoma, Missouri, Kansas, Nebraska, Iowa, most of Colorado, South Dakota, Montana, Wyoming and large parts of North Dakota, Minnesota, Texas and Louisiana.
  • New Jersey abolishes slavery.

    New Jersey abolishes slavery.
    New Jersey became the last northern state to abolish slavery.
  • Slave trade ended.

    Slave trade ended.
    Thomas Jefferson signed a bill stating that slave trade was banned in Africa starting January 1st, 1808.

    This treaty ended the Mexican-American War. Mexico ceded New Mexico, Utah, Nevada, Arizona, California, Texas and western Colorado for $15 million from the United States.

    The Compromise of 1850 consists of five laws. In 1849 California asked to become a free slave state which made north and south unbalenced. As part of the Compromise of 1850, the Fugitive Slave Act was passed, slave trade was abolished in Washington D.C, government was established in Utah and New Mexico, and the boundary was decided between Texas and New Mexico. California became a free slave state.

    James Gadsen bought land from Mexico. A strip from south of the Gila River and in southwestern New Mexico and southern Arizona for $10 million dollars.

    Months after the succesion of South Carolina six other southern states followed. They were Georgia, Florida, Alabama, Mississippi, Texas and Louisiana. Later Virginia, Arkansas, North Carolina, and Tennessee. Togther the formed the Confederate States of America. They elected Jefferson Davis as their President.

    The Civil War began in Charleston, South Carolina at a Union fort called Fort Sumter. The Union soldiers refused to leave this fort, so the Confederates fired cannons at the fort on April 12, l861.

    Abraham Lincoln wrote the Emancipation Proclamation that freed the slaves in the United States.

    This abolished all slavery in the United States.

    The Civil War eneded with the surrender of the Confederates. Both armies had roughly the same number of deaths except the south was destroyed.
