  • Missouri Compromise

    Missouri Compromise
    The Missouri Compromise of 1820 was passed in order to keep the balance in Congress between free states and slave states. The 36 30 line was created because of this compromise. This line stated that slavery was abolished forever above this line in the Louisiana purchase territory. The compromise admitted Missouri as a slave state and Maine as a free state.
  • American Anti-Slavery Society

    American Anti-Slavery Society
    The founder of this organization was Theodore Dwight Weld and in Philadelphia, PA. The most notable members of the American Anti-Slavery Society was William Lloyd Garrison and Frederick Douglass. Wanted to immediately stop slavery.
  • Mexican American War

    The Mexican American War started on April 4, 1846 and ended on February 2, 1848. One of the main factors that lead to war is Texas's independence in 1846. Also because American military in Texas were attacked by Mexican military. president at the time James Polk wanted to expand the US, "manifest destiny".
  • Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo

    Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo
    The Treaty of Hidalgo was a peace treaty that officially ended the Mexican American War. As a result of this treaty the United States gained an immense amount of land (525,000 square miles). It included present day California, New Mexico, Arizona Nevada, Colorado, Utah and Wyoming.
  • Compromise of 1850

    Compromise of 1850
    The Compromise of 1850 were made up of 8 resolutions, that were proposed individually as bills. Senator Henry Clay presented these resolutions in Congress on January 29, 1850. These compromises reinforced the Fugitive Slave Law and the slave trade in Washington D.C. was abolished and California was a free state. The Missouri Compromise and Compromise of 1850 added more tension between the North and South, leading to the Civil War.
  • Kansas-Nebraska Act

    Kansas-Nebraska Act
    The Kansas-Nebraska Act on May 5, 1854 allowed the territories of Kansas and Nebraska to choose whether they become a free or slave state. It repealed the Compromise of 1820 that stated slavery was abolished forever above the 36 30 line. This was known as popular sovereignty. This was the last thing that kept the Union together and without it there will be chaos.
