    The Underground Railroad

    The Underground Railroad was a systerm of helping African slaves ecsape their plantations. With peole in the South and North helping the slaves move though to get to Northern U.S or Canada with serect rooms in their homes. This cause the Fugitive Slave Act a part of the Compromise of 1850 to try to combat the amount of slaves that escape. Not all slaves were able to escape their masters.
  • Wilmot Proviso

    Wilmot Proviso
    After the United States taking over lands form Mexico after the Mexican-American War many debates in congress accured over weather the new land should be slave or slave-free. Southerner claimed that it should follow the Missouri Comprise Line and the Northerners claimed that it should be a free-state. The Wilmot Provsio was introduced by David Wilmot a representative out of Pennslyvania. This went on to cause the createion of the Compromise of 1850.

    End of the Mexcian-Amerrican War
    The end of the Mexican-American War gave new land for the United States. With the gain of present day New Mexico, Arizona, Colorado, Nevada, Utah, and California it caused debate over free or slave state. Later the United States would purchase more land to create the present day boarder with Mexico. After the war the United States, the Wilmot Proviso would come to help create free states and then in 1850 the Compromise of 1850 had those new lands become a choice of the people over slave or free.

    Compromise of 1850
    A set of five laws passed in September of 1850 that were to compromise wants of the North and South states. The laws were Fugutive Slave Act which required Northerns to turn in run away slaves. Other key parts passed was: California would join as a free state, no slave restictions on former Mexico land (New Mexico, Utah, Arizona), slave trade becomes illegal in Washington D.C, Texas losing some land to New Mexico, and Slavery is legal in Washington D.C.

    Canning of Senator Sumner
    Three days before, on May 19 Sentor Sumner out of Massachuetts made a big anti-slavery speech in the senate. Sumner called out two southern Democratics Stephen Douglas and Andrew Butler, for having slavery. Senator Butler's kinsman U.S Repsentative Preston Brooks heard about the speech and on May 22nd, 1851 attacked Sumner with his cain.

    Written by Harriet Beecher Stove that tells about the bad side of slavery. Becomes a national hit and create more and more conflicts with the North and South.

    Anthony Burns uproar
    At a federal courthouse in Boston, a fugitve slave named Anthony Burns is being held their. Many local citzens have many attempts to try to rescue Burns. U.S President Pierce ordered Burns be returned to his master in Virginia to enfore the Fugitve Slave Act.

    When Kansas and Nebraska requested to be a state it brought up conflct over if they should be free or slave states depsite both being over the Missouri Compromise Line. To decide what type of state they should be they left it up to Popular Sovereignity. This cause large influx in migrants to Kansas to try to vote. Missouri citzens moved there to get the slavery vote as New Englanders came to vote for a free state. This casued conflicts with the Bleeding of Kansas.

    Bleeding Kansas
    Shortly after the signing of the Kansas-Nebraska act and the influx of people into the state of Kansas both on sides of slavery and free states, conflicts started over interested. Called Bleeding Kansas these conflicts were the prelude to the U.S Civil War and happen around 1855 to the start of the Amercian Civil War.

    John Brown kills 5 proslavery activist.
    During the start of "Bleeding Kansas" abolitionist John Brown murders 5 proslavery supports and escapes his capture.
  • Dred Scott Case

    Dred Scott Case
    Dred Scott an African-American slave who moved with his owner from Missouri a slave state and moved to Wisconsin for a short while with his owner, a free state. Scott sued hoping to get his freedom since he was living in a slave-free state. Supreme Court Justice Robert Taney ruled the case out due to the fact Scott was African and not a U.S citzen and that he was property to the slave owner and you can bring your property anywhere that you choose.
  • John Brown attacks Harper Ferry, Virginia

    John Brown attacks Harper Ferry, Virginia
    On October 16th, 1859 John Brown alon with 21 other men raided the federal arsenal at Harpers Ferry, Virginia. Brown's plan was to steal weapons and arm slaves and start a slave rebellion. U.S marines lead by officer Robet E. Lee came to stop the raid and within 36 hours most Brown's men were killed or captured. Brown along with the other men capture were hung December 2nd, 1859.
