  • First Union

    In 1794 the first labor union was formed in Phillidalphia. Shoemakers made this union they called themselfs the Federal Society of Journeymen Cordwainers. This group was so important because it was the first of many more unions that changed the work palce forever for the better.
  • The world's first factory act

    The Health and Morals of Apprentices Act this was the first factory act ever passed. This law made it so htat there was a 12 hour work day limit for 14-18 year olds and a 8 hour day work limit for children 9-13. This law was the first of many to make the work place safer.
  • 1836 Early trade unions propose state minimum age laws

    "Union members at the National Trades’ Union Convention make the first formal, public proposal recommending that states establish minimum ages for factory work" National Trades Union covention members made a proposal stating that states should set minimum ages for factory work. This was the first formal and public proposal for setting minimum work ages.
  • National Labor Union Requested an Eight-Hour Workday

    The National Labor Union tried to persuade congress to make a Eight-Hour workday. Although they failed they brough much needed attention to the matter.
  • Pension

    In 1875 the American Express Company set up the first U.S private pension plan. This was retirement plans for workers.
  • Massachusetts Factory Act of 1877

    Massachusetts passed the first factory safety and health law in America in 1877.
  • 1892 Democrats adopt union recommendations

    Democrats listened to unions recomendations about banning factories from employing children under the age of 15. This was an important event because it was a move in the right direction twards getting laws that protected children in the work place and made it so children could have a childhood and where not exposed to unsutible workplaces.
  • 1938 Federal regulation of child labor achieved in Fair Labor Standards Act

    Federal law finally made laws stating how long children were able to work and setting minimum age that they where allowed to hired at.
  • National minimum wage law enacted

    In 1938 a minimum wage was set. This was a huge event because it made it so companies could not take as much advantige of their workers as they were before. The fist minimum wage was set at .25 cents.
  • OSHA

    OSHA was passed by congress to reduce the injuries and deaths in the work place. OSHA was created to take care of employies and make sure that they are in safe enviroments. OSHA protects workers. This is a big event because it is in my opinion what the unions where trying to achive.
