  • Missouri Compromise

    Missouri Compromise
    The Missouri Compromise was a law passed in 1820 to keep balance of power between slave and free states.
    This was a really significant compromise because the way it separated people and how they acted toward each other. This was especially seen from the south since they really didn't favor this new compromise because they felt suppressed from the new compromise.
  • Annexation of Texas

    Texas was made a state in 1845. Mexico was invaded for their land and was taken over and Texas became a state.
    This was such an important event since this was a act upon only the people of the union and was not the governments movement.
  • Mexican-American war 1846 to 1848

    The war was started by Americans since they wanted to gain land to form the land of Texas and they invaded Mexico. Then followed the annexation of Texas.
    This was a very bloody but short war since Mexico didn't stand a chance against the Americans since they didn't have advanced tech as in the Americans did. Though, this war made many Mexicans mad and there would be a treaty settling giving the Mexicans some land back but not as much as they had from before.
  • Compromise of 1850

    There were five separate bills passed in one compromise. This bill made California a free state though made Utah and New Mexico into slave states. Though after this was made it enforced the fugitive slave act.
    This was a bill that made many controversies since it was making new slave states but also started enforcing the fugitive slave act and this made it nearly impossible for slaves to escape and go to free states since owners could find the slaves and take them back to where the were before
  • Creation of the Republican Party

    This party was made to keep slavery out the states. But they also were anti-slavery with any problem.
    This was made to specifically made of northern democrats and free soilers and was against slave powers. This was substantial and had lots of support from the northern states and slave free states and had many people supporting the new party.
  • Kansas Nebraska Act

    This act overturned the Missouri Compromise and left voters of Kansas and Nebraska wether or not they would be a slave or free states..
    This caused many problems between the south and the north and what the state becomes. This caused a war between both sides and this was called the Bleeding Kansas. This was really bad since it caused a fight between both sides.
  • Bleeding Kansas

    This was a fight between the south and the north fighting for the soil of the Kansas territory.
    This was a very bloody and violent war that was being fought for the right to ethier have rights to have slaves or have a free slave state by popular soverreignty.
  • Dred Scott v. Sanford

    This was a courting hearing between a black slave who lived in Illinois and Wisconsin he sued for his freedom and took it to court.
    This was a huge debate and one of the first times a slave went to court to voice what he wanted and wanted to stand for. This was one of the major turning points in arguments about the rights of slaves and what they can fight for what rights they do have in free states. This made many people question the free states and what they were meant for.
  • Lincoln Douglas debates-1858

    Seven debates that arguments between Dougals and Lincoln and they were arguing the issue of popular sovereignty and the Dredd Scott decision and many other problems.
    This was one of the biggest debates in history since it was the most documented and one of the most attended debates in history and there was many new discoverers and ways of discussing problems since many people didn't know how to talk about the problems like Lincoln and Douglas did and inspired many new groups and people.
  • Election of 1860

    Lincoln was the candidate that won the debate and won for the for the republican party. when this happened many of the south states seceded from the union.
    This was a very crucial turning point in American history since this was when the southern states seceded from the union and this started a spark in the likes of war for the north and south and this was a flip that switched for the country since many people were ready for a war between, the south and the north and that was a very tense state
