  • Archduke is assassinated

    Archduke is assassinated
    Archduke Franz Ferdinand was shot and killed by a Serbian nationalist teenager who ended up killing him ironically. The teen originally was just eating at a sandwich shop and was waiting for another person to kill the Archduke. This failed, and the Archduke's motorcade just happened to pass by the teen, and he then shot and killed him. This is a painted picture representing the assassination.

    The first world war was based around Germany. Germany was fighting a war on two fronts, East Russia West France, after they declared war. Germany was the second country to declare war in World War 1. These are German soldiers in the trenches on the western front.
  • US declares it's neutral in the war

    US declares it's neutral in the war
    In 1914 many central power countries were declaring war on each other. Some of those nations include, United Kingdom, France, Germany, Russia, etc. The US however didn't enter the war, under the presidency of Woodrow Wilson's first term. This is a meeting in congress of Wilson presenting his speech(no picture to be found of when the US declared it was neutral).

    Lusitania is sunk by German U-boat
    In 1915, the Germans declared that the North Sea, and all the sea that surrounds the UK was a war zone. The Lusitania was a United Kingdom mail ship traveling from the United States to the United Kingdom. While it was just about 15 miles off the coast of Ireland, it was sunk by a German U-boat. 128 Americans died when the boat was sunk. The Lusitania is being sunk by a German U-boat torpedo.

    Zimmerman telegram gets intercepted by US
    The Zimmerman telegram was the one of the last straws that lead the US into World War 1. This was telegram sent from Germany to Mexico. The Germans were trying to get Mexico to start attacking the US on the Southern border. This completely backfired on the Germans, and then this brought the US into the War. This was the telegram that the US originally intercepted from Germany to Mexico.

    Woodrow Wilson asks for war and it gets accepted.
    On April 2, 1917 Wilson requests war on Germany, and soon after it gets excepted by congress. America arriving with fresh troops was sure to end the war as it put Germany one its heals. Months after war is declared, American troops were in Europe. This was a newspaper at the time that had the heading,"U.S. OFFICIALLY AT WAR."

    Wilson lists his 14 points
    Wilson in January comes out to say that he has 14 things that he wants to happen at the end of this war. Many leaders of other nations didn't really agree with all of them. Some did with a few like freedom of the seas. Others like creating a league of nations was not completely agree on that. This is another Newspaper that had headlines of Wilson's 14 points.
  • US gets their first big victory in the war.

    US gets their first big victory in the war.
    Months after Wilson proposed war to congress and his 14 points months later, the US had got their first big victory. The battle was called the battle of Cantigny. This battle lasted from May 27-31. In this picture you can see the battle field of Cantigny, It was a very open and vulnerable area. Very little area for cover, all there was was trenches.
  • The war officially ends

    The war officially ends
    On the 11th of November exactly 99 years ago from now, the great war officially ends. The time the war ended was very exact. It ended on the 11th hour, of the 11th day, of the 11th month of the year. The war ended when Germany had surrendered. This picture is of an actual newspaper at the time that had the head line of,"World War is Over".
  • Treaty of Versailles

    Treaty of Versailles
    The treaty of Versailles was the final event of the first world war. The overall meaning of the treaty was that it ended the War between Germany and the allies. A few things that were on the treaty included Germany loosing territory and getting new borders, 100,000 person army, and many other things. The war ended completely 5 years to the day of the assassination of the Archduke. This picture is the meeting of nations agreeing on the terms of the treaty, and Germany's punishment.
